Some Europeans claim, the Islamists are better than the Kemalists in Turkey, is this just a wishful thinking ?

Additional Details
Sorry, I don't have a link. If the Turks of this section claim that they never noticed anything like that in Europe, I will delete my question. There is not reason for asking if you don't know about it anyway.
(I don't speak Turkish)

as a Kemalist, i can say that i am glad to hear that europeans think islamists r better than kemalists. from this aspect it means kemalists work for Turkish ppl's interest, islamists work for european power's interest.

ErAs
Such Europeans also think that El Quaeda, PKK, Hezbullah are not terrorist organizations lol...

Above poster doesnt know what he is talking about..Mustafa Kemal Ataturk guided his nation to the victory over invaders and founded republic of Turkey. He modernized the life of Turks in every way.He is not anti-Islamist all he ever did was building a secular democratic system.

Prove your claim, show us some links to articles otherwise you wont get an answer from this section.

Some Europeans think, the Islamists that are clamouring for more and more freedom will be willing to give the same freedom to everybody else once they get the political power they demand. Nothing could be farther than the truth. No religion abandons power willingly. Those same Europeans just forgot the fight for freedom of belief against Christian establishment. They forgot how many people died for it.

Hi,
firstly AKP isn't islamist movement, they are fundamentalist/religionist same as neocon's in USA or el-kaide in Afghanistan.
They have the co-chairman for the Great Middle-East project

and they are the most important role in the imperialist worlds most important political project.

The Europeans governments can support this anti-democratic party ,this is theirs decision.

As a Kemalist , for me ,the most important values are FREDOOM and INDEPENDENT TÜRKİYE.

Atatürk is the most fêted hero of Turkey but he did not found a school of some principles. Kemalism was founded by Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu. He spread his ideas through Kadro, a periodical he published. After the death of İsmet İnönü, Kemalism was rediscovered one more time mostly by supporters of the military coup. Atatürk said "Ben size hiçbir dogma bırakmadım" means "I did not leave any dogma" and “Hayatta en hakiki mürşid ilimdir.“ means "The most genuine mentor in the life is science.”

You should not confuse the Islamist fundamentalists with the Neo-liberalists who have a western interpretation of secularism, nor Atatürkçülük with Kemalism.

The passionate interest that Level 1 users (like you and the one above) take in Turkish political affairs flatters me immensely. Still, I have no idea what you are talking about so unfortunately I am not able to satify your earnest curiosity. Also, since you are a level 1 user, you might have passed unnoticed that this is a travel section and unless you ask anything related to travel, I shall have to report you as a good, guideline abiding yahoo answers user.

Ah that word "Kemalist", what does it mean?

I agree whole-heartedly with Galaxia above who noted that there is a big difference between the great ideas of the actual man Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and then those who posthumously took Ataturk's ideas and converted it into self-serving dogmas.

Many Muslims will similarly argue that there is a big difference between the actual (hakiki) truth of the Q'uran and then the politicized version of Islam that has been handed down to us today. I am not yet decided on this latter point (whether there is a "hakiki Islam" that is fundamentally different than the form that we often see today), but that Ataturk's original ideas have been dogmatized with diluted truth there is no question.

Ataturk is the reason for the women in my family becoming educated and fathoming equal rights with men. When you go to Turkiye, you can easily note the answer to "What would have happened if Turkiye stayed with Sharia rather than experiencing Ataturk's reforms?" by going both to currently more Islamically conservative areas as well as more liberal areas and evaluating their difference. My relatives, who are from the most conservative city, Konya, had a longer ways to go with regards to women's rights than their contemporaries in other cities. To this day, there are fathers in Konya who do not allow their daughters to go to any school but Imam Hatip, and there are men who very openly take "kumas" (concubines) with the purported reason that they want to have another kid.

So, when Europeans or any other Western nation, tells us that they prefer for Turkiye to be ruled by an Islamic party, then it is very difficult not to take that as an insult. "Kemalism" in its current incarnation may have some major problems. But a return to Sharia is like going backwards -- to a really bad memory.

PS: Hmmm... I wonder why some of our AKP-ci kardesler don't speak up here to defend how great the Islamists are for Turkiye. Surely, they would not resort to pointing thumbs behind the scenes? Hz. Mevlana, did say

Ya olduğun gibi görün yada göründüğün gibi ol.

Surely, when Recep Tayyip Erdogan oh-so-spontaneously decided to take Hz. Mevlana's 800th anniversary ceremony as an opportunity to spew his political propaganda, you did not think that you can get away so easily with violating my most beautiful experience -- oh did you, AKP-ci kardesler? In what universe did you think that you can lay claim to Mevlana's words, lay claim to our most beautiful experience in Konya on that 800th anniversary, when you have not got the faintest idea what does this mean: Appear as you are, or be as you appear.

When Mevlana's beautiful poem of infinite tolerance "Gel ne olursan ol yine gel" was removed from its central location and attempted to be hidden outside near the tourist exit, did you think that I would not notice, ey AKP-ci kardesler?

Do not dare to claim Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi as "your own" when you have not got the faintest understanding of his breath. Ey, AKP-ci kardesler.

Well the same Europeans deny Turkey is a European country. The same Europe watched as the Serbians butchered Bosnians..

So,wouldn't be surprised if they showed their blindness once again, would we?

I have no idea why Europeans would claim that...I think Europeans are more allergic to islam than anything. I do not believe your statement to be true.

Keyser

I find it very hard to believe that,as with todays political climate it wouldnt make any sense.

a kemalist is a supporter of democracy and secularism aswell as western values/culture.

an islamist is a supporter of fundemental islam, which means sharia law ect.why anyone would think the latter is better is behond me.

nakis
this is the truth. today your islamic turkish government is more friendly to europe than your army which is kemalists. moreover kemalists they do not want the peace and they do not the contact with europe. they are more fanatics than islamists. here in greece the common sense is that all the greek-turkish problems are the result of kemalists behaviour.

I support that claim,Kemalists worship Kemal Ataturk, but he did nothing good for Turkey. He was strongly against Islam also, even though he said himself that he's a muslim. And if u r muslim u can't try to change Islam, but he brainwashed Turks into thinking that he's Jesus and that he's sent by God and that Allah is called Tanri and other imaginary stuff. And the worst of all is that their Kemalism is isolating them from the world, and it makes them automatically hate other nationalities for no reasons unless these nations submit to them and their new "religion".
