Spain or England? |
Im moving to Barcelona in May to start a new life. I live in England and have done all my life. Has anyone been to Barcelona as I have never been? I want to move there to enjoy the way of life, enjoy the sun and meet new people. Do you think Spain is a better place to live your life than boring old England? |

Hello! I am from Spain. Personally I think it is a good country and I like the lifestyle. People are mostly friendly, altough we don't speak english very well in Spain hehe. There are a lively nightlife in almost all cities in Spain, we have SUN, historic, cultural and historical sites, beaches, mountains, SNOW and very good food.
It's true that salaries are bigger in the UK. Probably you have more chances to become succesful in the UK than in Spain, but we're again at the G8!!! Spain is a rich country, one of the reachest ones, but obviously, not as rich as the UK.
I can't say anything bad of the UK. I've never been there, but, nonetheless, I love It! The UK has a lot of good things too. |

Barcelona is O.K. but would not be MY choice to live as it can get very cold at certain times of the year. And stay away from the Zona Franca area as it can be a dangerous area in the evenings. Bearing in mind that the mountains are not too far away the wind can get very strong at times. You don't say how old(or young!!) you are but personnally I would opt to go further South to areas such as Benidorm, Alicante, or Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca But not as far south as the Costa Del Sol as it is far more exspensive too live. However it is of your choosing where you want to live so the best of luck but I know from the past when I worked in Spain that the best thing in Barcelona is the road leading out of it. |

Barcelona is a lovely city, but I'd advise living there for a year before actually committing yourself to staying permanently. You haven't even been there yet, you don't know if you'll like it. You might prefer other parts of Spain, or even another Mediterranean country. Don't sell your house in England just yet! |

I have lived in Tarragona, about an hour from Barcelona. And it was a wonderful place to live in. I now live in the US, and miss Spain so much.
So if I had to pick between England and Spain, I would definitely pick Spain. The culture, food, and people are the best! |

If you are young and presently live in a city you won´t notice much difference except the weather but why would you want to live in a place you have never even visited? There are much nicer parts of Spain to live in and to visit so try somewhere for a holiday first. If you are intending to work it is ESSENTIAL you learn the language unless,of course, you go to the Costa del Sol or little England!! |

I have lived in Madrid, Spain and have visited Barcelona. I have also visited a bit of England. The Spanish way of life is a lot different. It is more relaxed and can be less intensive, however, often times this means less financial career success, so if that's something you want you will need to consider that. You will not need to know Spanish if you are in Barcelona, everyone there speaks english or Catalan anyways, but if you live anywhere else in Spain I would recommend learning spanish.
Barcelona is a great city with a lot of great things. However, it is very tourist orientated. Not really American tourist, but it seems like the vacation spot of Europe. So you'll get to meet a lot of different people.
Spain is a great place to live, again you'll have to embrace the Spanish style of life, so if you are a go-go person that always has to have things organized, planned out, and don't like living with a little chaos, then Spain is not for you. Spain is also a bit cheaper that most EU countries even though they are on the Euro, I assume a lot cheaper then England on the pound.
Maybe you should move to America, you'll double your income in a matter of a 7-8 hour plane ride.
Good luck and have a good life. |
