You can say it all in one phrase:
Το Λακωνίζειν, εστί φιλοσοφείν" (To lakonizin esti filosofin)
Spartans used to lead a very simple, strict, hard life, where they had to be trained for combat since childhood. They talked too little and therefore their words had to be meaningful.
That phrase means that : Talking like a spartan, is being a philosopher.

Η ταν η επι τας(i tan i epi tas), means or on the shield the spartans had for the war, or you bring it back..I explain better..
Spartans were military society...When the men were going to the war,the mothers were saying giving them the shield..Or you ll bring it back, or you ll die on it...
