The REAL Malta.........!? |
I am planning to go to malta and have heard a mix of opinions. I have been told that mainland malta is an un-finished building site but the island of Gozo is lovely!
Have you been? I really could do with an honest opinion!

There is a lot of building work going on in Malta but please do not let that put you off going. St Paul's bay would be ideal for a stay. Why not do a stay of say a week in Malta and maybe 4 days in Gozo?
Malta is beautiful. You must see Mosta Church and Mdina city (silent city) steeped in history. D9o a harbour cruise. Visit Blue grotto and do a trip on the boat around it. Absolutely stunning water and colours of the rocks. The water is so clean and clear.
Also visit paradise bay (stunning beach) and Pop Eye village.
Gozo is very rugged and greener. Malta has now joined the EU so roadworks etc is not uncommon.
Sliema and st Julian's are also worth a visits.
I stayed at the Fortina Hotel and Spa...fabulous place with excellent views of Valletta which is also worth a few visits. |

It depends what you're looking for. When I was last there, there was a lot of building work going on in the Sliema and St Julians Bay resort areas. They'll probably have it finished by 2008. Valetta is great if you like architecture. If you like old ruins, they've got the oldest in the world. Mdina is interesting for a day. The North of Malta and Gozo are unspoilt and fairly empty.
The great thing about Malta is that nothing is very far away. If you stand on the ramparts at Mdina, you can see nearly all of it. If you don't like one bit, jump on a bus and try somewhere else. |

In Malta yes we tend to have quite a few building sites as this is the 2nd most important industry after tourism. But this is concentrated mostly in non touristic zones like Swatar which no tourist will have any reason to visit.
Unlike Minerva said in Malta we have quite a number of sandy beaches.
If you search pics on google and have a look at
Golden Bay, Malta
Mellieha Bay, Malta
Ghajn Tuffieha, Malta
Gnejna Bay, Malta
Armier Bay, Malta
Ramla Bay, Gozo, Malta
Pretty Bay, Malta
Blue Lagoon, Comino, Malta
Paradise Bay, Malta
St, Paul's Bay, Malta
St. George's Bay, Malta
St. Thomas Bay, Malta
to name a few beaches.
History here is great from the 7000 year old temples (older than stone henge) to the middle ages, the knights of Malta down to World War 2.
Nightlife goes on till four in the morning and the streets are safe.
Being in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea Malta offers some of the best dive sites.
The food is good but in hotels and in tour packages the quality is not as good as when you go as an individual to a restaurant. (You will have to pay a bit more)
If you plan to go to Gozo for a day (Malta's Sister Island) a suggested itinerary could be... Dwejra Azur window, Citadella, Xlendi for lunch, Calypso's Cave photo stop and Ramla Bay for a swim.
In Malta you MUST visit Valletta & Mdina.
Januarry 2008 the euro will become our currancy.
Just beware when booking a hotel. Most of the cheaper hotels will be overun by foriegn students so I would sujjest paying a bit extra a go to a hotel students cannot afford or a self catering apartment.

My answer won't be of much use as I went to Malta in 1972! But funnily enough that description you gave could fit it even then. There is only one sandy beach in Malta, the island is very dry and dusty, has little or no vegetation, there are little wild birds in cages everywhere, it's very religious - the buses, houses and street corners have crucifixs in them. All the women in rural areas wear only black. But the Maltese people are very nice and friendly and go out of their way to help you, or at least they did in 1972! |

I have been once and am going again in October. I found the island quite quaint. There was some building work going on and the island itself is not as developed as the UK infra structure but it is lovely. Everybody speaks English. Getting about is really easy due to the hundreds of yellow buses that charge very little. Loads of places to eat, some have said that they find Malta expensive but I don't think so.There is an area full of nightlife at St Julians which is not for me. I would say that its not really a young persons island but then again I am 45!!!
Anyway everyone is different and you will never be able to decide unless you visit - oh and the weather is quite good too! |

Honest opinion is you have to make up your own mind. You will either love it or hate it.
Gozo is nice, but Malta, especially Valletta is brilliant - but I loved it, others say it's dirty, scruffy & untidy. |

I've been to malta now 3 times during the last 6months. i actually came back tonight from 2½ week vacation.
I don't actually like malta that much, but somehow i just ended up going there so many times.
The main island is small and you will get to know it in a short time very well. There are "lots" of sandy beaches there. well atleast 5 on the whole island. but not only one. there is one in paceville (st. julians) and one that's called ghan tuffieha and it's a nature preserve place next to this other sandy beach called golden bay. i liked all three of them. and this time i visited the southern part of malta too in marsascal (or something like that) where my friends live. so yes you can find beaches and blue water there.
Malta is still very dry, and it is in a weird way very interesting arcitecturally.
About the people on malta.... I don't like the maltese and i feel like they don't like the tourists that much even though they live off tourism. The service in most restaurants is not good (i haven' been to very high end ones, but wouldn't go cause the service would be as horrible). It seems like they don't care about the customer. In the nightlife you can see mostly italians, russian, german, libyan, tunisian and some scandinavians. i feel like "the great nightlife in paceville" was seen during the first time i was there for a week. the same people were there the next time and the same jokes the same songs the same danceroutines and so on... And during high season now, the places were only more crowded.
But what is good about malta is, that despite the maltese that don't seem to care if the tourists come there or not, everyone is happy, cause the climate is warm and even though some arabs work 12 hour days they still can find time to go to clubs and have a good time and it seems like there is no complaint around you.
The pricerange is the same as in finland. so it's not cheap to be there. It's like the reverse central europe in some way. :D it's warm, but food and liquer in stores costs alot... (in bars it's really cheap, especially in havana).
But it's an experience to go there. Maltese people are such characters. |
