They look stupid no matter what they do and say.

They should begin with allowing their 30million half of the population (who are Kurds) to speak their mother tongue and express their ethnic heritage.

If they dont want to allow them to live freely, then let them have their own independant state.

WHAT DUMBASSES!

geez!

As a matter of fact, YOU are right...
she looks AWFULLY stupid

the point is..
she'd look awfully stupid no matter what she puts on

because THEIR HEADS are in darkness and covered against the beauty forever

the ugly head cover is just an indication of this fact

Keyser

its not a turban...

she wears a head scarf and it doesnt look silly, she isnt wearing a fruit basket on her head..

it should be banned however when she accompanies the 'president' as he is the face of turkey and turkey is supposed to be secular.obviously both of care not about that, which shows they value islam more.

No she doesn't look silly, however she doesn't represent the majority of Turkish women. That's the problem.

To Zoi:
Zoi, I understand your logic but that kind of headscarf (or turban or whatever it's name is) she uses is not a tradition of Turkey. It's a tradition of some other culture. But I don't blame foreigners for that misunderstanding, because if I see a first lady with a special outfit, I would automatically think "oh, well, so this is their country's tradition, that's why she is wearing it". Think like this: imagine all of a sudden a Greek first lady starts to dress like a nun (!!!) and after a while the rest of the world associates Greek women with nun outfits. My example is a bit exaggeration I know but something like this is going on in Turkey right now.

Bored!
How could you be so rude, do you have any idea of an answer for this?

The Republic of Turkey would (if the chance was given to those currently in power) instantly become the Islamic Republic of Turkey...Its funny how many people say that those who wear headscarfs do not represent most Turkish women, why is then that the same political party which have obvious right wing/islamic fundamentalist policies are brought to power again and again? Lets be honest, the Turkish electorate are too blind and hungry to see what is going on under their noses..and those who do realise it are held in detention without reason!! Im sure Kemal Ataturk is turning in his grave. Oh and I am Ninjas remarks about the kurdish people are very true, why is no peace settlement being worked out? because the government enjoy having their own soldiers (I say own but those they send to conflict are generally of kurdish desent...) die and use it as an emotional tool to gain peoples support for war rather than peace!!

I believe that, being the president's wife, she and her husband are making a statement against the secular character of the state. They don't act as individuals, but as institutions as long as he is president.
As for the head-scarf on Muslim women, I believe they shouldn't feel they have to wear it, that is what people find wrong about it. I mean, they could wear it on some occasions and not on other occasions, but if they feel they can't go out without it, then it is an obligation. And religions should not put obligations on every day habits, just attitudes. I mean, not dressing provocatively is no longer synonymous with covering your head, as it was in Muhammad's time! His words must be interpreted in today's fashion context.

Totally Blunt
Turgut Özal's wife looked silly without the türban. It is not about the looks, it is about the brain beneath the türban or the fes.

Does the Scottish quilt look silly?
Does the 'Dirndl' (traditional suit in Tirole, Austria, they wear it still at the villages) look silly?
That's the question.
It is not what you wear but how you support what you wear and what represents wearing something specific.
I'm against the scarf because I think that it violets women right to freely express theirselves, but it is a tradition and we have to respect it and that's why it could not be silly.

@Gugu: This is something I didn't know abour the scarf. I was so sure it was a Turkish tradition!
I understand what's your point, she is the first lady and should represent at least the average Turkish woman.
Well, I don't know...but wearing the scarf, she doesn't give a silly/bad impression to me.

The head scarf doesn't look silly on me ,and some of the are really fashionable

Its just that I dont agree with the idea of wearing a headscarf because it represents something in religion.

Just to let all the usual ppl that know who I am, know...I only have 1 account. Orange~Moon. Tamam? Don't accuse me of being some1 else just because of brunette avatar or same ethnic background etc; See... u guys turned me in2 a paranoid with ur antics!

Consider this a preemptive measure.

@Suriyah - I would spell it "Sheik" not in the indian/english spelling. O btw, I didn't thumb u down. I don't really do td'ing.

I don't think it matters that she wears a headscarf. I don't think it shows Turkey favouring an Islamic state over a secular state either. It just means that she is a muslim woman who wishes to cover her head. If Gordon Brown's wife had a crucifix around her neck (the cross with Jesus on it) nobody would say a thing about it.

mete
you should not label some one as silly because she wears a head scarf

secularism is either being equally distant to all religions meaning not recognizing any one of them or their traditions (which seems unpractical, more like an oppressive regime) or being equally near all religions and recognizing all of their traditions (which also seems equally unpractical to me)

in turkey, in my opinion islam is the only religion recognized (lets face it, there are national holidays based on islamic holidays, not any other religion that I am aware of) so turkey at this point is not 100% secular (because it is unpractical) [similar things can be said for most western countries as well]

First secularism needs to be defined with strict borders(I don't really see a clear definition) than can one make comments whether an action is secular/not, other wise I don't see those comments to be much different from an opinion.

p.s. this is a turban
