The best of Eastern Europe? |
Hi guys! I am travelling through Europe with a friend in 2010 and am allowing approx 2 weeks for Eastern Europe. We are looking for amazing food and a cultural experience rather than drinking and crazy nightlife! Which of the following countries are worth squeezing into a 2 week time frame and are any of these not recommended for our purposes?
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Thanks a lot for your help! :D |

Hi, I am an American who lives in the Ukraine and has traveled around Eastern Europe and would have to agree that two weeks will not be enough time. As you will find out that getting around Eastern Europe will take you longer than Europe or America for many different reasons, so give yourself more time than you expect just for travel days.
If it were me I would try to pick three countries and see as much as I could of them. From your list I would pick Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia or Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia.
Have fun I know you will find your trip very enjoyable.

My recommendation is Slovenia, also one of those countries which used to be part of Yugoslavia. A great all-in-one package for spa lovers, casino-goers, alpine skiers and hikers as well as beachlife lovers! Cheap, not overly crowded, people speak great English, great food & landscapes, etc. A real hidden gem in Europe! |

i'd say don't try to see everything because you just don't have the time.
definitely go to prague - it's a beautiful place and it's kind of compact so you can see a lot in a short time. another fantastic place in the czech republic is a small town in the south called cesky krumlov. it's a unesco world heritage site. it would be good for a day trip from prague.

otherwise budapest in hungary should be worth seeing.
i haven't been to bratislava (capital of slovakia) but people say it's just a bit too small and provincial and there may be better places to go. this is what people say of ljubljana in slovenia, too. both countries have great nature, though.
i'd definitely recommend dubrovnik in croatia - it's one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen.
i've also been to kotor in montenegro which was quite interesting (a day trip from dubrovnik) and in mostar in herzegovina which i'd advise against. it's very small and apart from the bridge there is nothing to see because all the old buildings are souvenir shops. horrible place (sorrry, don't mean to offend anyone).
i don't know much about the other countries.
hope this helps.

Czech Republic - Prague. (awesome)
Croatia - Dubrovnik
Romania - Sibiu (European Capital of Culture 2007) & Sighisoara (medieval)
Montenegro - Budva. (from spring to late summer)
Talin in Estonia is also very beautiful, but way to far from the other ones if this is road trip. |

For only two weeks I'd start in Riga (Latvia), then Vilnius (Lithuania), then Warsaw (Poland), then Krakow - Auschwitz memorial (Poland) then go to Bratislava (Slovakia) and then Prague (Czech Republic). Thats more than enough for two weeks using trains and buses. If you try to squeeze too much you will get very little out of the trip. |
