Very early, I guess. I really don't remember when.
But I was surprised when I learned that, from 800 AD on, Turkic tribes migrated en masse to a wide region including northern Black Sea regions, Balkans, all the way into Arabian lands, and that they founded new states (beylik), took over some from weaker rulers or aided local leaders militarily. Turkic influence was much wider than I thought. Official history deals with the ancient times and then the Selçuks and Ottomans. I was really really surprised when, on National Geographic channel, I watched a short story on Karays living in, I don't know, Lithuania or such. The girl that they showed was cooking something like puf böreği and speaking mostly Turkish.
When I say we are EVERYWHERE, I am not making a funny remark. We ARE everywhere. |

Trotsky vs Kerensky- НекIо!

I was always interested where my other Turkish brothers lived. So of course I knew there were Turks in Iraq. Wherever we are from we have the same spirit and that is the important thing :) |

We always knew... Upon declaration of independence, certain Turkish cities (like Musul and Kerkuk) were unfortunately left out of Turkey's borders due to political agreements signed during independence. We learn it in our history classes... |

Well, as a Turk (Cypriot) living outside Turkey, I have learned about Turks living in other countries since my childhood. Later at school we learned that when Oguz Turks (Turkmens) came west, they also passed through Iraq and Syria, and some of them settled there.
As 'outside' Turks we always tried to learn about people like us. We preserved our language and culture until today. Unfortunately, there are still some people in Turkey who don't know about us. |
