well, actually its not 99% muslim. the source of that statistics is government and when you born, the officers just write your religion in their records as 'islam' if your parents dont say them you were not. for example i am not a muslim but in that records i seem to be. i dont care actually.

i think the real ratio of muslim population is app. 90%. further to ricardo's answer, 30-35% of them are practising their religion sometime. and 15% of them are trying to practising it totally. the others are just living their culture which consists of islamic addition on Turkish culture. (for example my parents are in this class for example)

there is a different branch of islam also which is called 'alevi'. i dont know if there is alevi people in different countries or not, but turkish alevi people which i like their culture so much, are usually very modern, moderate and companionable. their religion is a bit different. for example they dont go to mosques, they have a different place to worship which is called 'cemevi'. their worshipping ceremony is really nice with their own music. you should see it.

the second one is ateism and there are 1-2% christians (most of them are orthodox and protestant) and 1% jewish people.

Medellín
98% are Muslims, but in fact only the half really practice the islamic faith...The other half is just "de facto" or/and "culturally" Muslim, just like the Europeans who feel Christian at Christmas time only...A lot of those people may even consider themselves as atheists...That's why the second religion is probably atheism.
Also there are a Jewish and a Christian communities (1% each).

rhsaunders
"Moslim" is a variant spelling of Muslim. Islam is the predominant religion there.

Xabier
Officially Turkey is a secular state. Still around 99% of population is Muslim.

Qu'est ce que tu pense?
C K has a point. Many of us have in our legal documents that we are muslim, when in fact we are either not muslim or not a devout muslim. I know for a fact that on my citizenship, it says that, but that was what my parents filled out and not me.

Moslim and Muslim are the same thing, just different spellings...like color and colour.

Top 3 religions are Islam, Christianity, Judaism.

Secular states do not have an official religion. A great majority of the population of Turkey is stated as Muslim (official birth records). Most of those do not actually practise Islam fully (just like most Europeans not going to church regularly). The official estimate is 98% Muslims. There are also Christian (Orthodox/Catholic/Protestant) and Jewish minorities.

ikkus
Turkey is predominately Muslim (98%), though most citizens consider themselves very secular. Turkey is also a very modern, Muslim country.

moslim, muslim, islam, whatever you want to call it, they all belong to the same religion! But just so you know, most Turks are muslim, but they aren't fanatics, they are usually pretty tolerant. Many Turks that say they are muslim aren't even that much religious lol.

Totally Blunt
I would say Muslim, Atheist/Agnostic, Orthodox, Catholic.

If we are making a distinction within religion, then it would go 1. Sunni, 2. Alevi.

C K explained it very well. ya most turks are secular and they do not practice the muslim religion like most people think they do. Many women do not wear headscarves, go to mosques, and they drink alcohol now. Bacon is even sold at stores for breafast now. And alsoa dding to what C K said, i'm in the same situation, my parents didnt declare me any religion so on my birth certificate it says i'm muslim, and i'm added as another muslim in statistics. I'm an athesit, my parents are both christian. we were all born and raised in turkey. there are also many jewish people in turkey. in actuality there's a very small number of turkish people who actually fully practice the muslim faith.

istanbul bogazinda yandi gonlum
1- Muslim 2-Catholic 3-Jewish
