Turkey currency?

which currency is best to use in Turkey? Lira or Euros??

Kimon
In general keep some Lira to pay small bills: a meal, your taxi, a coffee or a drink. Change €30-50 every day for such expenses. Evey day the YTL is devaluating a bit so there is no reason to change all your money at once.
For major purchases, use Euros or USD, especially when you are dealing with the owner of the shop (in contrary to, say, department stores, that you are dealing with an employee).
Once you finish your bargaining (always do it in Turkey) and agree at a price in YTL, pull out your Euros or USD and demand a better rate than the bank, say 3-5%.

take English £ 's they love hem and i you are English you will know what you are spending
never pay what they ask !!!

Mark, you can use any currency you like in Turkey. US dollar, euro and UK pound are all welcome in many shops and touristic places. You can also use your Visa, Master, Diner's Club cards etc. It is better to change your currency into Turkish Lira at a bank branch or exchange office. Rates may change a tiny bit from day to day. If you use Turkish Lira you can avoid any misunderstanding and also the greediness of a few shopkeepers.
Thursday's rate: €1= 1.78 YTL. $1= 1.30 YTL

In Turkey the lira (YTL) is used. Euros, dollars and pounds may be used in ultra-touristy places, but I wouldn't recommend it as you might get shafted in terms of prices and you're driving up prices overall. To correct previous posters, you can use 1 YTL coins at the trolleys at the airport, as well as 1-euro coins--a classic example of why it pays to deal in local currency.

I have never heard of dollars or euros being accepted at Marks and Spencer in Turkey.

Totally Blunt
You can spend Euros and Dollars in touristic places.

paddypower69
Lira because they don't have Euro's... But if your going out there, they quite like taking English money in the shops and markets. I found they preferred the English notes! But be prepared to haggle!lol

turkish lira but they will accept Euro. English notes go down VERY well!!!

zoeksalamander
Lira, 'cause they don't have the Euro.

yamahabela
You should always have sufficient amount of Liras with you
whenever you travel anywhere within the Turkey.
If you have thorough knowledge of the prices of items and
services in Turkey , you can pay with Euros, but you might
get your return money in Liras (less than due)

The lıra ıs your best frıend. Wıth any where ın the world ıs the same mate. You wıll get dıfferent rates at dıffrent places wıthın few yards. But wıth a natıonal currency charges are the same for any goods you buy. If ıt say 20 lıra ıt ıs 20 when you pay. But when you try to pay wıth foreıgn money you wıll never get the rıght value. And thats any where ın the world. But when ın Turkey exchange your money at exchange bureu they pay more than banks or your best bet ask the shop keepers some who need the euro wıll pay you hıgher than the exchange rates.

CRISPY
some shops do take euro but stick with lira, its the real currency

MORTİCİA
Lira is the currency but you can use Euro and Dollar at the international shops such as Marks and Spencer , Next, Zara etc.

For the most part, Lira...but a lot of places take all 3. There are tons of currency exchange places all over...even the jewelry stores exchange them.

They take anything but often exchange rates in shops are not good as they dont move with the daily exchange rate.Always change at banks not change offices as they are much lower rate.Dont change money before coming as it is better rate here.

djave djarvoo 'djas originel
they prefer stabilized currency ie.euros/british pounds or even dollars....they "will" charge you more! for using turkish lira because its too unstable...we didnt believe the travel agency when they told us.....so we took turkish lira...and had a hard time trying to get rid of it....for best prices take EUROS...

its Turkey they accept all money, trust me take whatever is best for you. they commonly accept euro, in fact at the airport the trolleys for the luggage accept the euro.

Turkey is great many countries could learn from their ways of accepting money. most prices are in lira, dollar, pound euro.

have fun,
