I seriously think that Turkey is a mix of euopean culture, turkic culture ( from their central asian origins) and islamic culture...
That's why this country is probably unic and doesn't have similar exemple in the world.
I think Europeans shoudn't have so much prejudice about the Turks...
And don't forget that Turkey is a " key " country because it's a bridge between civilizations, and also it has a strategic place...

David, French-Israeli, and I am a friend of the Turks...

I'm Macedonian!!!
nope, but they will be soon...

It will be soon as Turkey completes the requirements, although it might take years to do it. They are not in a hurry.

To Lady GOP,
Armenia, Armenia Armenia. Jesus! Armenia is irrelevant when talking about the EU and Turkey. The world does not revolve around you people, duh!

To Slave,
I don't blame you if you don't want Turkey in Europe, it is hard to be a slave for 12 gods and if you add Turkey then it will be 13 gods you will be serving now. If Turkey ascends into the EU, your reply would be considered as blasphemy. Which polls for the whole of Europe says that they don't like Turkey, please show the link for that and prove you are not just a pretty face and I will be your slave. If not go and get me a round of beer. With all the other dumb answers here, I need it!

We don't need Europe.

slaveof12gods
Europe does not need Turkey! recent polls show that most Europeans don't like Turkey to be part of Europe!

That is too bad! but hey ,at least you have the US backing you up ! well , to some extend! I'm not going there! not the most diplomatic realtionship if you ask me?

Qu'est ce que tu pense?
I say let Turkey into the EU. One extra country wouldn't hurt the European Union. They've already accepted every other country on the entire map. God, next thing you know the US is going to be part of the EU too. Mine as well let Korea in as well.

edit- (el tee) by some chance did you get that last line from Phantom of the Megaplex? Just curious.

Joannah
Eventually they will ascend into the EU. The EU would be stupid not to factor in Turkey. Everything boils down to figures, and with Turkey's economy picking up, those who clamour for exclusion will shut up because they will have to admit they need Turkey for peace and stability, especially in the Middle East where they lack the machinery in terms of support.

A mid-review is scheduled for 2008, but the EU wants to keep the timetable open because it coincides with coming EU institutional reforms. As for Turkey's entrance into the EU, progress in some areas has been slow. But so far, everything Turkey has done so far has been done on good faith – notwithstanding previous rhetorics by EU leaders – such as Valery Giscard D’Estaing’s declaration that admitting Turkey would be the “end of Europe.” http://www.countryrisk.com/editorials/archives/cat_turkey.html

If Turkey is given a formal timetable, the long runup to EU membership will transform and stabilize the country – just as it wholly transformed, in less than a decade, the Eastern European states.

It will definitely take some time because of a lot of underlying issues. Most importantly within the EU itself, apart from Turkey's "issues", members have to overcome their subjectiveness and prejudices over Turkey's religion with contrasts highly with their own. Until that hurdle is overcome, it will take a long long time. It's not about geography folks. It's about the clashing of civilizations plus European pompousness and ignorance. They are afraid about things they are ignorant of.

EDIT: Realist: If you want to take things out of context, it is understandable because you don't understand how religions play a part in this. The term in the International arena is "European". It is like saying being Armenian is only about geography. You should disengage yourself from the "victims mentality" frame of mind. Not all countries are saints, they've all committed some kind of attrocity towards humanity as well. Armenia is no exception. As I said, other countries have their "crimes against humanity"issues on that as well that is why it isn't tabletop. Tabletop means not the focal point of discussions or contentions.

READ This: I got this from the EU's youth section so you can understand it better. Read from pages 1 to 2 dear. http://europa.eu/debateeurope/pdf/summary_debate_europe_072006.pdf Now this is from the EU themselves, but if your think that you know something they don't, then by all means put out your money where your mouth is, apply for a position there and enlighten them. ^_^

Turkey is not a part of Europe and should NOT be a member of EU. (I have never understood that Turkey has been competing in the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as Israel.)

The Babe is Armed!
I'm rather late into this argument, but recent articles indicate that the EU is instituting programs to give benefits to bordering nations without giving them full entrance into the EU. The idea is that the EU needs a buffer around itself, both geographically and politically.

I think it's long been an issue that even though Turkey is secular and not an Islamic state, the idea of Europe's boundary extending all the way to Syria, Iraq and Iran is just bothersome to a lot of Europeans.

If Turkey relinquished the Kurdish regions in the East, it would
a. strengthen it's case to be in EU, since the buffer would then be the new Kurdish state.
b. get the PKK off its backside
c. eliminate the Turkey/Armenia border

It won't every happen though. We know that. If Turkey did that, then the pressure would be on Iraq and Iran, maybe even Armenia and Syria, to relinquish lands as well to make the nation which most Kurds envision as Kurdistan. That's really not going to happen.

It's an elegant solution to an age-old problem. Everyone knows it, but everyone involved is too prideful to entertain the idea of downsizing the boundaries.

My thoughts are as follows. First let me say that my parents were born in Turkey, I have been there myself, and I love the Turkish culture. BUT, Turkey has no business being in the EU simply because it is not European. Turkey is part of the Middle East......... Please save the thumbs down for someone else.

Turkey's membership will not even be considered for at least another decade.

The government has been given a list of goals they must achieve before being considered.

They must reconcile with Armenia.

They must come to a fair agreement with Cyprus about withdrawing from their Island.

They must fess up to their long list of crimes against humanity.

It most defiantly has nothing to do with their color, race, or religion.

Sorry charlie, my country is not responsible for 3 Genocides
in one century. Hello, what planet are you from?

(Turkey's "issues", members have to overcome their subjectiveness and prejudices over Turkey's religion with contrasts highly with their own)
Do you think its that easy to put aside an Armenian Genocide, a Greek Genocide and the Illegal Invasion into Cyprus, killing thousands of Cypriots, and stealing everything they owed. adding to that your problems with the Kurds. What stake does religion have in this? Being a Muslim or accusing someone of prejudices for not being one is no way a justifiable excuse for Turkeys crimes against humanity.

anlarm
Wow so you noticed! Yes Turkey is not in EU, yet. But she is a candidate and is moving fast toward full membership. I see that some people are still stuck in geographical boundaries. Let me ask them a simple question.
If Turkey is not in Europe, then how come Cyprus, which is further east than half of Turkey's territory in in Europe? You need to get over your prejudices and biases.
As for those 'crimes against humanity', those who blame Turkey need to look in the mirror first.

Europeans are so racist, they always refuse the other countries, as they don't like the Muslims, the Asians, the Africans, the Arabs, the Turks,etc...

So I just ask one question, ok ?

Why France had invaded Morroco,Algeria,Tunisia, Egypt,Mauritania,Tchad, Cameroon, Benin,Congo,Gabon, Togo,Ivory Coast,Mali,Guinea-Conakry, and my own country Senegal ?
Did they think that those african countries belong to Europe ?

Turkey is in Asia. Turkish people should lean towards Meditarianian (I can't spell).

Therefore, Turkey can be considered part of the Meditarian (don't look at me, I'm not the one makeing these rules) and at times is said to be in the Middle East (which does make sense since some where between Italy and China,.. but again I'm not in control of these things).

Why are you upset or is this yet another person doing home work?

Totally Blunt
Ditto for Irmak. You can measure, if you donot believe.:)
