Turkish girl with a question about the election? |
Hi my name is Ayla and I am Turkish. I live in America and was quite surprised at some of the things said during the last presidential election. When false accusations about Obama being Muslim were spread, i had to wonder if someone who was actually Muslim ran, why should that be such a problem? I thought that the US respected all religions and just because someone is different does that mean that they should be associated with a terrorist? I personally do not believe so. Although I can not vote, please share your opinions and views with me. |

Can you imagine a Christian running for president or prime minister in Turkey? There is no law against it, but people will always vote for candidates with whom they can easily identify and feel comfortable. Since religion plays such an important role in defining people's identities, it's very hard for any candidate that doesn't belong to the majority religion in his home country to win an election. It's human nature, not racism. |

Many Americans are very accepting of races and religions as long as those races and religions are white and Christian. While there are many Americans that claim to be accepting of other races, deep down the idea of a black president turns their stomachs. I have very close relatives that claim to be Christians that refused to vote for Obama simply because he is black, and even went so far as to spread through email the kind of accusations and ethnic jokes that you refer to. The notion that many recent terror attacks, including September 11, were carried out by radical Muslims makes many Americans distrustful of all Muslims, which is one of the major reasons that Obama is disliked by some people. This is very hypocritical, because there are many terrorist attacks and other vicious crimes carried out by white Americans, some saying they were acting on behalf of their Christian beliefs. Murders of abortion doctors, the Oklahoma City bombing, cult activities and religious sexual misconduct including rape of underage boys and girls by Catholic priests and other religious leaders, and attacks on blacks, homosexuals, and other minority groups, etcetera, all are or were carried out by white Americans. |

Your very question echos the reason why terrorists need to be crushed at all costs. They give all muslims a bad name.If your peaceful, pray on your own, work hard, pay your taxes,it doesnt matter one bit, christians are going to suspect you.
It took forever for america to accept the idea of a black man as leader, and hes not even in office yet.It will take decades upon decades until they accept a non-christian as president.
Be angry at terrorists, its thier selfish, crazy, barbarian islamic ways that tarnish all muslims everywhere. |

I live in America too, and the question was not whether he was muslim or not. It was WHY he was Hiding it! Because he kept on saying he was a Christian and that he believed in God and Christ, so when the rumors that he was a Muslim came around, people were like," Well then why is he lying?"
Probably if he was Muslim, he would lose some vote due to 9/11 but the main question was whether he was lying to get more votes?
Nobody wants a liar as their president..
I dont also think that his supporters would have changed their mind if he was muslim but he probably would have lost because of the undecided people out there would have voted for McCain.
Only ignorant people relate Islam to terrorism, the other day I heard a girl say that suicide bombers killed themselves and others because their religion said so. I was SO pissed! It was a socratic seminar so I talked about how suicide and murder were both HUGE sins in Islam for ten minutes. She was scared I think. Hahah :) |

Elected leaders of nations reflect the values of the people. Do you think Turks would elect an Armenian or Greek Orthodox as Prime Minister or President? Of course not--99% of Turks are Muslims. Well, why would it surprise you when most Americans would not choose a Muslim as a leader to reflect their values when 99% of Americans are not Muslims? This has nothing to do with respecting religions. You can respect your neighbor's religious practices if they are different from yours, but it is highly unlikely you would vote for him over someone who shared your values. Would you vote for an Armenian to lead Turkey? How about a Jew or an atheist?
I know Turkey well. It is easy for a Turk to not perceive the Islamic-Terrorism link. Thanks to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Turkey is much more intellectually advanced than other Muslim nations. The vast majority of Turks do not hold extreme religious views. But if you read or watch the news regularly, you must be living in a bubble with your eyes closed to not understand why the 80% of the world that is not Muslim has a perception of Muslims as terrorists. Do you know what just happened in Mumbai, India? Almost every day there is a story about some Muslim going on a rampage or blowing himself up at public area, such as a restaurant or market. Americans noticed that the men who flew plane loads of its people into its buildings were not Mormans or Hindus. Europeans noticed the people blowing up train loads of commuters in Madrid and London were not Jews or Buddhists. Russians noticed the terrorist who forced hundreds of small children into a gym in Beslan and blew it up for joy were not Christians. The terrorist who killed all those Australian vacationers in Bali were not Atheist. What about those three Christian girls who had their heads cut off Indonesia and the Buddhist monk in who had his head cut off in Southern Thailand recently? Do you know the common religion of the perpetrators of those decapitations? How about the person who blew himself up at a Baghdad masjid yesterday? What do you think his religion was? |

people are not prejudice just because they are cautious of who is running in the election. And when we saw that he was running we did not freak out and accuse him of bad things we were just curious because of what has happened to us in the past.Such as september 11th! |
