Turkiye NOT TURKEY!?

Why dont people change the country name Turkey to Turkiye

is it because they dont know how to pronouce Turkiye?

We are not named after a animal

Kimon
Turkey is the English name for Turkey. Face it. There is nothing you (or anyone) can do about it.

Why do you call Hellas (Greece) Yunanistan? Can you not pronounce Hellas which is the proper name?

Hurricane
it would be better if there weren't any animal called turkey but it is very difficult to change the name of a country.we have a example too. "Mısır" do we care it?,it is also a plant name.i think we shouldn't care about it.cuz there will be always some stupid people who will insult us,even we call it Turkey or Turkiye.

.....and Brits should change London to Londra,Americans should say NivYork from now on.....and how about India,(Hindistan in Turkish) what do you think they should call themselves,
end up this inferiority complex and let it be

I think it should be Turkiye, but it's not fair to other people who can't pronounce it. Would you rather have it as Turkey or something people can't pronounce?

genç türk
It could be Turkia. English speakers can't pronounce Turkiye.

Of course i prefer Turkiye but we also call Misir,Hindistan.
Kimon: Just for info do you know why we call it Yunanistan?:-) It is coming from Ionia:-) I guess in the old times the way they pronounced Ionia turned into Yunan. I also wondered why we said Yunanistan then i found out that it was because of this reason.

As a Brit i find it extremely hard to pronounce it Turkiye. We Brits just can't seem to get our tongues and our heads around some of your pronunciations. it is the same as most of the Turkish people I meet, they can't say my name properly, it comes out WAL rather than VAL. I certainly don't mean to offend you or anyone else, but it is far easier for us to say Turkey, plus it would be easier for you to understand us!!!

anlarm
Oh please get over it people. We call Egypt 'Mısır' which also means 'corn'. We call India 'Hindistan' and in Turkish 'hindi' means 'turkey'. In Greek turkey is 'galo' which resembles 'Gallia' (France, in Greek). It seems that bird is international.
What is more, why do we all say Japan, Japonya etc. when it is actually Nippon?
And how come no one but only Germans say Deutschland? Why do we call it Almanya, Germany, Germania etc.?
Why do we say Switzerland, İsviçre, and not Helvetia?
We have to accept the fact that throughout history, some people have given a different name (than the original) to some countries, a name that is more suitable to pronounce in that particular language, and which also has a linguistic base.

Aphrodite
The turkey is a wonderful bird,nothing bad about turkeys.I think Turkia sounds good and easy to pronounce for a country's name.

DejaVu- RETURNS
Kimon I also like to call you Kimyon you like it? well yunanistan does not mean an animal name in Turkish, can you actually understand the difference???

I also agree with you..Turkia would be better...

The Babe is Armed!
That wouldn't be changing the name of the country, only what some people call the country. Nearly every country on earth gets called something different by people of a different language and culture, as has already been pointed out about Egypt and Greece. Germany is called different names as well, and America is pronounced in a number of places as "Amreeka" or it's translated, as in Etats Unis This doesn't amount to a name change.

If you're so concerned, call it Turkiye, but the real name is Türkiye.

Well, I agree with you. However, we can do nothing about it cuz it's an internationally recognized name such as a country called Hungary. I always write Turkiye when sending a post card and never had a prob cuz I'm aware that there are educated people that understands what that means but on the other hand there are numerous uneducated people that believes Canadians live in igloos???? eh! some do this intentionally some not.Blame it on the society and/or their lack of education.

Imelda
Tanya, I don't think there is anyone in the English speaking world who believes that the country was named after an animal??? (well, maybe some uneducated people!)

There are so many countries in the world who have the spelling and pronunciation of their country's name changed when it is translated into another language - it's not just Turkey. To be honest, I DON'T know how to pronounce Turkiye - when I was in Turkey for six weeks, the Turks I met pronounced it "Turkey" though now that you've commented on the pronunciation, I'm not sure if they did that so I'd understand. What is the correct pronunciation?

It simply is the English name for your country.
Germany=Deutschland
Norway=Norge
Japan=Nippon
and so on...
Its not like English speaking people are only doing it to your country.
What is England called in Turkish? And some other countries?

No, English speaking people should change the name of the animal that is called by our country's name. In my idea, it should be:

non-flying-bird-bigger-than a-chicken-and-goes gobble-gobble and-is-quite-ugly and-used-to-be-called-by-a country's-name-that exists-somewhere-east-of-here damned-if-I-know-where

They can call it, in short, THE bird.

Rain
I agree with you

I like Turkey.
