hello world |
Vienna or Prague? |
I have never been to either of these cities....but I hope to get to see both eventually....and I probably can't do them both justice on one trip. I have read good things about Prague lately....and I am keen to see Vienna because I am a classical music lover. I suppose my question is....which should I try to see first? |

I've lived in Prague for years, and visited Vienna many times. You'll have a memorable time in either city. Prague is inspiring, the spires and domes of the cityscape are beautiful, and you can meander down the streets of Old Town or New Town, or any of the adjacent neighborhoods and take in the feel of cobblestone streets, cozy cafes and all the elegance the city has to offer. It's an upbeat cosmopolitan city that lives entirely up to everything you'll read about it. Vienna feels a little bigger, and it's really a beautiful city, you can't go wrong to pick Vienna. And the palaces are much more majestic than Prague Castle. But overall I think you'll get a much better experience in Prague. Yes, Vienna is a haven of classical music, but Prague is definitely a top 5 worldwide classical music destination. You can attend operas and symphonies playing the classical masterpieces for the tourists and locals every night of the year. The National Theatre and the National Opera house are must visits considering your classical music interests. Also St. Nicholas' Church at Staromestske namesti plays daily symphonies, and I don't have to tell you about a stop at the Mozarteum. In the Czech Republic, classical music is a national pasttime and a national right. Plan to spend about $5-$15 USD a day/night to attend concerts and symphonies, as any local can afford the good, popular concerts.
Prices are becoming more expensive in Prague, but it's still very affordable compared to Western Europe or the US. Enjoy yourself, and relax to know you're only a short train trip to Vienna if you have the itch to see more. |

I've been to both several times and both are wonderful places. It's a pretty easy trip by train between the two. The direct trains take 4 to 4.5 hours. Sky Europe has cheap flights between the two. Right now, it's possible to get a 39 euro fare one way. http://booking2.skyeurope.com/skysales.aspx?culture=en-US&reference=3UKAFILI
The flight time is only 50 minutes - less than taking the train from Rome to Florence for example. Of the two, I would choose Prague first, but not by much. |

Just back from Prague last weekend. Its a great spot. Not as cheap as other Eastern cities, but still your money goes places there. Great bars , sights and fun.
Vienna can be summed up in three words, Beautiful, Safe and Elegant. People are great too with some fantastic sights. My preference for Vienna goes with the people. So helpful ( and My Austrian is non-existent ) and honest and nice.
If budget dictates, hit Prague first,
if a overall time, hit Vienna.
But,, either way,,see both. |

Not sure where you are coming from but financialy speaking Prague would be the more economical option, then I suppose if you still have money go on to Vienna.
I visited Prague last winter and found the city to be intensly beautiful; the people on the other hand could not have been more different than their city. I think the pall of Communism still clings too thickly to everyone's soul.
From what I have heard from a recent visitor to the States from Vienna the place is like a museum and people are very traditional and the city is generaly a safe and clean environment. If the person that I met is any indication the people should be much more pleasant.
Whichever you chose, enjoy your trip. |

Prague, before it gets too crowded with tourists and it is still a lot cheaper than Wien. |

Prague without a doubt. It's beautiful enough to take your breath! To think that Christmas is coming up, the markets will be at Old Town. Dress warmly, it is lovely to be outside having you feeling the magic. If you have a little time left, you can always take a train or plane to Vienna. |
