Views on marijuana in turkey? |
How is marijuana( or other forms of it) viewed by people in Turkey? Is it widely recognized that it is not as dangerous as opium or even alcohol? Is it just kind of frowned upon but still somewhat commonly used like in so many other industrialized countries?
Please don't go off on anti-smoking rants I'm merely just trying to gather information on the general attitude. Additional Details Oh i'm well aware its illegal even though its illogical considering no one has ever died from marijuana or hashish. And no studies have ever shown its physically addictive. |

As you enter Turkey from the Greek borders in Evros (Maric) river and drive north or south along the river you will soon see acres upon acres of hashish plantations inside rice fields.
The weird of the story is that all over along the river there are scores of barracks full of soldiers and officers of the Turkish armed forces......
Mind you exactly the same happens on the Greek side.
To be honest I know that most of it is for export (it is a very fine variety) . But I can guarantee that a big part of it is consumed locally. In fact, when I was doing my military service there every night the border guards (from both sides) were stoned promoting the Greek Turkish brotherhood! |

High Tech is right. It doesn't matter how long it takes a certain material to kill you. Marijuana is a drug. Cold medicine taken to get high is drug.
Young people may look favorably upon them, but that's because they are just kids. The moment they become responsible for someone else's life, i.e. become a parent, their attitute changes and see them as drugs. |

Like any other developed countries in the world, marijuana is considered a "drug" and it's illegal in Turkey. "drugs" are illegal because they are addictive and dangerous

I must say I'm against the use of any type of mind altering drugs. There is a saying in turkey "ottur zarari yoktur" which means "It is grass and it is harmless" so I think this is the answer you are looking for. It is popular among complete losers, teenage wannabes and hippies. |

Marijuana itself is not as dangerous as other drugs and it is not addictive. That's true BUT there is one thing you are forgetting. People don't stop just smoking marijuana. They start with it and then when it is not enough they pass to real drugs LSD,extacy, heroin which cause real brain damage and deaths.
So for me a person should not try to find comfort in marijuana, cigarette or drugs because these things don't bring happiness.
You go out and make sports you will have more endorphin.(happiness hormone) Because soft or hard drugs are just playing with your hormones and brain.
In Turkey like all the countries we are divided in two. Some who think it is not dangerous and some who think it is dangerous. For me it is dangerous, it is not something i would like seeing around.

Personally, I don't care if turkeys like a smoke now and then, who doesn't. My main concern is their feathers going up in smoke as they're trying to light up a blunt.
LOL! |

Actually marijuana IS harmful. It dulls your sense of reality and therefore it can be a risk to other people in your society. I've read horror stories of what happens if you take that stuff and trust me, it isn't pretty. I read a story once that a babysitter was smoking it and accidentally put the toddler in the oven, because she was high. As you can see, marijuana isn't exactly something you want to make legal. |

I know that marijuana is available in Turkey. It's popular with younger, urban, university crowds in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara. But please know that the Turkish authorities take illegal drugs very seriously and even if you are NOT a Turkish citizen, you are subject to prosecution under their laws. Ever see Midnight Express? Rent it.
I would not advise trying to bring marijuana or any other "drug" into or out of the country. Customs is very strict.
That being said...nargile (waterpipe or hookah) is very popular in Turkey. Pipes are filled with flavored tobacco. You can pass many nights overlooking the Bosphoros, smoking, chatting & drinking tea. And if you venture away from the tourist traps, it's a very authentic Turkish experience.
Enjoy yourself...just use common sense. |
