You will have a great time, and yes the hostels are safe. I reccomend using the Twizi Amsterdam page (it has a map and details of Amsterdam hostels for less than 25 dollars.) It is hard to not have a great time in Amsterdam : ) |

I went there alone the first time (let down at last minute by 'friend') and had a great time. The hostels are very friendly. You are bound to meet lots of people, lots of Aussies & NZ seem to travel alone. There are a couple of streets in the red light district that used to be a bit dodgy, (drug dealers)but the people in your hostel will be able to advise you. Generally, keep your wits about you. There are lots of hostels in the lovely old houses. I used to stay at the Kabul on Warmoesstraat, don't know if it's still there, but it's close to the station and overlooks the main canal. And it's next door to a Police station!
Amsterdam is such a cultural melting pot, I wouldn't have thought you'd get any racism. All the Dutch seem to speak English. It's a beautiful place, and very easy to navigate on foot. Go to to Ann Frank's house and the Rijksmuseum. There's a website called, I think, Hostel World which should give recommendations for places to stay. And lay off the waccy baccy unless you're very sure of who you're with - can be very strong/cut with elephant tranquiliser and with a much more unpredictable effect than a couple of drinks. |

There is so much to see and do it's very unlikely you will get bored by yourself. I've often travelled alone and have found I've more often been bored when I've been WITH people as half the time you go along with what they want to do and spend your whole time with them even when you get tired of each other's company and the conversation runs dry. You meet lots of interesting people when you travel alone and can do what you want when you want.
The hostels should be safe enough, everyone will be in the same position as you, they are generally safe and friendly. All I'd say is be aware of potential thieves/pickpocketers, the airport and train stations are places to be particularly careful. And also watch out for the guys trying to sell drugs again at the train station, they're probably OK and won't hassle you but they did look a bit scary.
Aside from this it is a magic city and I'm sure you will have a great time. Enjoy! |

The hostels should be fine. You only get bored if you lack imagaination and spunk. Dutch racism? Not likely, most dutch are pretty darned tolerant. Holland has many folks from seychelles and indonesia, so browni types don't stand out. |

Amsterdam is like any big city (concerning safety and racial issues).
Visit the tourists sites on the Internet. |

The Dutch are really wonderful. But it's a big city. You won't be bored. You have the Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank museum, and go to the Herman Brood gallery. You have to be very careful going it alone. Be sure to get a money belt and/or socks and keep your money in those. Don't carry it in a wallet. The red light district is a blast, and you'll have lots of fun if you use common sense. |

Amsterdam is a perfect city to visit alone--totally safe. You should get yourself a street-car/TRAM pass (like a 48 or more hours pass), then you can ride all around the city for very little cost, and it is easy, because all of the lines end up at the main train station eventually--so if you get lost, you can easily find your way again. You can get the tickets for the TRAM at a little office booth to the left (near where the buses stop) as you come out of the main train station.
It will be REALLY cold at that time of the year, so just stay warm hanging out in the really cool coffee shops! Amsterdam is my FAVORITE city--email me if you want to know more info. |

Be sure to take the boat ride down the waterway. There is no problem with racism. You will see more diversity in Amsterdam than in any other city in Europe. |

You do not need to take anyone with you! Alone is the best way!
Amsterdam is beautiful, worked there while stationed in Germany as a DAC! People are the same all over the world, manners, respect, and proper dress ware opens doors no matter where you go.
Those that do not open, not only you but no one else would go there!
Enjoy your trip, I wish I was going there too! |
