Visiting to Crete (Greece) - Do people from EU need Passport to travel to another EU Countries?

I've Irish Passport but it is expired. I want to travel to Crete (Greece). I was wondering if I need to have a passport (not expired) to travel to another EU country or just the national ID card should be sufficient?
Additional Details
It is getting confusing. some say Passport is not required some say it is required. On the Greece Embassy it is celarly mentioned that any one from EU needs a valid passport (not expired) to travel to Greece. Can anyone confirm this?

Passport required.
- Nationals of Ireland (Republic of) may enter with passport
replacing documents valid on arrival.
says the website of the KLM aircraft company.

The source you have provided as additional information from the Greek embassy is a bit outdated and shows the status of 2003. Meanwhile Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden are members of the Schengen agreement for free travel in Europe.

The right to pass borders with national issued ID cards however is based on EU law.
Article 4
Right of exit
1. Without prejudice to the provisions on travel documents applicable to national border controls, all Union citizens with a valid identity card or passport and their family members who are not nationals of a Member State and who hold a valid passport shall have the right to leave the territory of a Member State to travel to another Member State.
2. No exit visa or equivalent formality may be imposed on the persons to whom paragraph 1 applies.
3. Member States shall, acting in accordance with their laws, issue to their own nationals, and renew, an identity card or passport stating their nationality.
4. The passport shall be valid at least for all Member States and for countries through which the holder must pass when travelling between Member States. Where the law of a member State does not provide for identity cards to be issued, the period of validity of any passport on being issued or renewed shall be not less than five years.

The right on travelling on the National ID Cards was already established in the European Agreement on Regulations governing the Movement of Persons between Member States of the Council of Europe of 13 December 1957. Paticipating members are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland.
A Swiss citizen for example can travel to Greece on a Swiss passport valid or expired within the last five years.

National ID cards are issued by Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
Despite heavy discussion about the possible launch of a national ID in the UK and Ireland no formal definitive decision has yet been made by these two countries.

Therefore Irish citizens still require a passport to travel.

in a real world no you don't it sin the EU law that you don't but in reality you wont get on a plane with out one i am afraid.

I wasn't aware there was an Irish national ID card. You will need a passport to travel to another EU country. Although there is complete freedom of movement between all EU countries for EU citizens, the passport will be required to prove you are an EU citizen.

Orla C
You need some form of recognised photo identity, some countries have an identity card, some have a passport. We in Ireland have passport. Ergo, you need your passport.

And if you hustle, have the cash and the form filled in, you can trot down to your local postoffice and pay for it there, and you will have your new passport next week.

gotmeridindirty
You definitely still need a passport to travel to other EU countries.

cpinatsi
An official ID card is fine. Not driver's licence or anything like this. But if you have a passport as identification, it must be valid (not expired).
People from the UK need passports because there are no ID cards in the UK!

No, you still need a passport!

You need a Passport or a Identity Card in case of a control, neverthelessthere are usually no controls on borders within EU and Schengen-Area. Controlls are very probable at airports.

Gigi
Your ID is sufficient- the greek embassy websites are not always updated, so don't worry.

I think you're all right from Ireland but people from the UK do need passports.

Is it something to do with Schengen . . ?
