Well, sorry to disappoint you but we don't. It is your friends problem if they do. You can't generalize 70 million people who are living in Turkey just because a few kids adore European Culture- whatever that is-.

We have one of the richest cultures of the world and we are very proud to be Turks. In fact, we usually get criticized that sometimes maybe we are too proud.

There are two groups of people who appears not to desire to see Turkey becoming a modern country. First group emerges from the modern day successors of Hitler whose mentality is set up to regard non-Aryans and non-Christians as inferior beings. As a natural consequence, they cannot stand seeing non-Aryan and non-Christian people being at least as modern as themselves which disproves their beliefs. Second group emerges from Islamic fundamentalists who blame non-Muslims for being the cause for all problems they face today, thus either they can stand seeing Muslim people living in harmony with non-Muslims.

Most of the Turks like neither of these groups, so we will not give in to their whining. We live as we choose. Modernity does not belong exclusively to Europe.

Culture doesn't belong to anyone. Ancient India and Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt inspired ancient Persia and Greece and Rome inspired the Golden Age of Islam inspired European Renaisance inspires us today.

Renaissance happened in Europe, after all. You can't blame people for being inspired. But that was centuries ago. Which, do you think, will be our new inspiration?

let me clear something up for you my friend.alot of turks admire the western civilised model of culture ok? turkish history is a mix between east and west,and turks will always be turks,not europeans,or asians,or middleeastern...TURKS.they have all 3 cultures which makes them unique to anyone else.

ud think people like you would feel proud that a muslim majority population rejects an islamic ruled state and fights terrorism daily.ud think people like u would feel better,that a country close to a dangerous region offers its hand to you to be friends.you'd think people like you would understand that turks are just normal people like everyone else and just want peace and security,but no...people like u are just constantly afraid of change and differences because of a religion.turks have been a part of european culture for almost 800 years.thats enough to join a flipping economic club for trading ok?

I am a Turk and very proud and have always told my European mates that, I don't like to be called as European, it is not some higher state for me, never!

And you know why? The word "European" intially connotates "ignorance" for me and we Turks are much more...

My family couldn't give a damn about what the european snobs think we don't run around saying "ohh ya were sooo european", your friends are taking it a bit seriously but ya I understand there are some Turkish snobs who want to look good. But hey... I couldn't care less if we were considered european I would actually like it if we weren't because EU is the biggest bully on earth look at how Turkey is like trying to change sooooo bad to get into EU we are working like dogs to get in and they still are hesitant but whatever I really hope we don't get in.
