you could instead join the air force and travel free of charge -- or become something like a scientist, archeologist, marine biologist -- if you love to travel, why not just work any old job to save for travelling in the future - or skip a year and spend it travelling Europe? You might realize travelling all the time is not as great as it sounds, you end up missing home and it gets tiring going from one place to another, never staying long enough to make friends. You could be an airline pilot and get to travel all the time, so you could look into the educational requirements for that job so you are prepared to enter that field. You can turn most jobs into what you want as far as travel, as they are always looking for, example, doctors in 3rd world countries, teachers, nurses, etc. |

If English is your native tongue or you master it at a native level, go for teaching English as a second language. Ideally, you would either double major English - Education or just Education with certification in English, and then go on to get your master of arts in teaching with specialisation in teaching English as a second language.
(PS If English is not your native language but Spanish or French is, I think you also would not have a problem finding employment teaching either of these languages to speakers of other languages just about anywhere in the world. Look into programmes specialised in these fields -- and if you are itching to go to Europe, try studying paedogogy at a Spainish / French university! Now back to information about teaching English:)
I do not know where you live, but most states in the US have good, relatively inexpensive state colleges that specialise in teacher education. In Massachusetts, for example, Fitchburg State College (see link below) has a great program for Education majors.
Then, if you would like to teach anywhere west of the former Iron curtain, you will need to get your master's. I highly recommend my own alma mater, the School for International Training, where you can get your master of arts in teaching English with a specialisation in international work / teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Then you'll be ready to roll -- just about anywhere in the world! Hey, and thanks to going to a state university, your student debts will be manageable by the time you're ready to fly.
BTW if teaching doesn't do it for you, check out the other options on the SIT site. But teaching English will be your ticket to anywhere you want to go in the world. With the diplomatic service you will end up going where "they" send you, working at an airline ditto (and what if you get stuck doing the New York-DC route ad infinitum...) -- with teaching English you are in the driver's seat.
Cheers |
