Don't go near any of the Bulldogs or Grasshoppers, complete tourist traps.... expensive, poor-quality weed and an atmosphere similar to Burger King.

Abraxas is nice, Amnesia, de Dampkring, also De Kuil (420 cafe) or The Rookies for a nice "brown bar" experience, especially D Kuil if youre on a budget. My personal fave though is the original Rokerij just off the leidseplein, get yourself some nice smoke, a pipe and a seat across from the huge mandala on the wall. Superb imported hash, great coffee, nice opium-den-style decor & incense, well-dressed trendy clientele and to cap it all... a trio of divine international beauties waiting on ya. Bliss!

PS - Why oh why am I still living in this P.O.S. country (england)

Afi
It's the one on main street, opposite that big house with the leggy brunet sitting in the window.

Used to be De Laurier just off Lauriergracht. back in the eighties that was. There was no tourists, it's where i discovered Dub and backgammon. They had two cats and all was dark wood inside. Their was a little area to sit upstairs with comfy sofas and a window to ventilate the place. I spent most of my late teens there.
Another favourite in those days was the Bulldog on the Oudezijdse. Nothing beat sitting in the sunshine with the window open.
Been back to Amsterdam since and the Laurier is gone now. There is another one aross the road now which i did like but the music was too hyped up. Can't remember the name of it though. Think it is in 2de Laurierdwarsstraat in the Jordaan.
Bulldog on the Oudezijdse is just not what it was. What is now the lower level used to be a sex shop. Everything is so shiny and new now. Not my cup of herbal tea :-)

The Green House Cafe just outside of the Dam Square!!! There are others there. The Bull Dog is like Starbucks there. They are every fookin' where. I only went into the Bulldogs that were away from the Red Light District. And STAY AWAY from the peddlers of other chit!!!! Most of the time those guys are just rip off people. Besides, there are far more fun things to do there besides killing brain cells with what they call "Hard Drugs". If you need more, just ask me. I have a vault of information on Holland
