Use plastic, best (for me ) VISA.Everybody takes VISA.
And of course a couple of bucks cash to buy a cup of coffee ,
or so .

I've always found withdrawing cash locally from ATMs to be the best - the banks do charge but you'll get a better exchange rate so the 2 cancel each other out.

As has been said: bring plastic primarily. But also bring a few larger traveller's cheques and a small amount of cash (US$ is best).

Travelers checks or credit cards. Make sure you make copies of them and keep them in your luggage or purse in case they are lost and you can call the numbers to get them replaced or report them stolen. Cash seems to be what everyone thinks to bring, but it is too easy for pick pocketers.

Your debit card.....its taken everywhere.

Mastercard or Visa.

Few months ago on my visit to Europe I took Travelers checks with me and I found them a real pain in the neck !
I mean, go to a bank and cash them.
Waste of time, it's not worth it.
I'll never do it again.
Plastic does it.
