Greek of course. The Greeks are the second largest learners of foreign languages in Europe so at least English is spoken by many-many people.

In schools students learn (except modern and ancient Greek) Latin and also at least two modern foreign languages (usually English, french many times German or Italian). Don't forget that Greece is part of European Community so they speak fluently English and many of them speak also French, Italian and German too. In southern Greece they speak also Bulgarian, Slovakian and Turkish because there are many tourists from Bulgaria, Fyrom and Turkey come in Southern Greece. In Ionian islands the most of the habitats speak Italian because of tourism too.

Greek (Ελληνικά, IPA [e̞ˌliniˈka] - "Hellenic") is an Indo-European language with a documented history of 3,500 years, the longest in the Indo-European family. Today, it is spoken by approximately 15 million people.

Greek? What in the world are you guys talking about? The language in Greece is Ελληνικά (Hellenic). Ask anyone there, in Hellenic, what language they're speaking. I promise you that they will say something that sounds to an English ear WAY more like 'Hellenic' than like 'Greek.'

I think everyone got duped b/c the less-sexy "It's all Greek to me" won out in pop culture over the more accurate but stilted "It's all Hellenic to me."

Dear Ya'Sou, the question asks what do people IN GREECE speak. Using the word that WE (outside of Greece) use ('Greek') is not quite accurate. Efharisto! (Just an FYI: I DO know that your name is not Ya'Sou. That was a joke, like "It's all Hellenic to me.") Have a great day.

Well now they are on the same currency as Europe (Euro) they are changing the official language to European, which is a mixture of all the languages in Europe.

The official change is in 2007.

Good luck or Gundes lucia amigetzin

Ελληνικά means Hellenic, which is what a Greek person would respond to your question in his language. But since we speak English, the folks who responded with Greek, were correct. This dictionary is not called Hellenic-English dictionary: http://www.kypros.org/cgi-bin/lexicon When Greek is written with latin letters, it is Hellenic. Ya'Sou!
