Though India is a non aligned nation still because of U.S. supporting Pakistan, it tilted towards Russia.India's first PM Pt. Nehru was a socialist . This also contributed towards the friendship.

Bilateral relations were at a high as both had a common outlook towards world affairs. USSR supported India at the UN on Kashmir issue and India approved of the Soviet-Afghanistan operation during the 1970s.Especially during the Indo Pak 1971 war when the US supported Pakistan both politically and materially, the USSR gave assurances to India that if a confrontation with the United States or China developed, it would take counter-measures. This assurance was enshrined in the Indo-Soviet friendship treaty signed in August 1971.

However, after the collapsed of Soviet Union, Indo-Soviet relations changed and both countries changed their priorities.
Still Moscow has long been India's main provider of weapons and the two countries enjoy friendly relations.

The world kind of chose sides after WW2. In that part of the world, Russia got on India's good side and America got on Pakistan's. It went that way for a long time but recently India is decidedly neutral, they even buy American arms now.

I know that during the time of the USSR there was a strong trade relationship. I know that because my family is Indian, and my grandfather was frequently making trips to the USSR for business reasons. From what I understand, for example, most Russian tea came (still comes?) from India.

I agree with another answer, that the US's relationship with Pakistan may cause India to lean toward Russia sometimes, but make no mistake about it, India is a very pro-US country. I think that at this point, the Indian govt. probably thinks it's a good idea to be friends with as many important countries as it can. Especially considering it's more tense relationship with China.

Indians are building their own military industry, but they still heavily depend on the weapons and armenent import.
Most of Indian battle aircrafts are imported from Russia, they are Su-30, MIG-27 and MIG-29. Russian helicopters used by India are KA-25 and KA-28.
India make use of Russian T-72 and T-90 (an upgraded version of T-72) main battle tanks and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle.
In recent years, Russia sold to India a number of military vessels like an aircraft carrier, ten submarines, five destroyers, three frigates and so on.
Also, India buy from Russia a lot of missiles and such stuff.
