I love the sea, the arts and I'm vegetarian too.
But I cannot understand what you mean by ruins. Do you mean perhaps that Acropolis with all its eternal monuments of spirit and art, among which the Parthenon is just ruins?
Do you mean that the Bysantine Churches of Thessaloniki with their unique mosaics and frescoes and the Bysantine Walls of the city are just ruins?
Listen, pal, just go streight to the beach, read your book, enjoy your greek salad and other vegetarian delicacies, but keep your opinion about "ruins" for yourself, especially when talking about monuments of world heritage.....
And as half Italian, I suggest you don't visit Italy too. It's full of "ruins" there, too... |

Ruins??????
the ancient monuments are Ruins????
lol
hey just go to N.Y or Miami
no "Ruins" there
and enjoy the culture of the modern life,
to a country with no heritage!
and leave Greece for those who respect it and know what those "Ruins" are about!
if there wasn't this ancient civilization, you wouldn't be able to live in Democracy, read those philosophical books, learn mathematics, chemistry and get your pills when you dont feel well
cause what you have now
was made by people before you

make a few vegetarian sandwiches, pick up some books about ancient culture in Greece, about islands and Macedonia ( that 'thessolonoki' rings some bells from another user's question, but must be coincidence, don't you think) and stay in your garden to read.....and when you are ready come to visit Greece and enjoy the monuments and islands and hospitality
have a nice and educational August |

First comment: It's "Thessaloniki" and not "thessolonoki".
Second comment: Somebody who claims to love literature cannot call the treasures of ancient Greek and Bysantine civilisation just "ruins".
I wonder what you consider as art, architecture and history. |

If as you claim, are a man who loves literature, then you made a big slip by referring to at least one of the Oldest Seven Wonders simply just as "ruins".
Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I expect you to rephrase the question and let us know what exactly you want to do once in Greece.
Yes, we have "ruins" because some civilized non-Europeans managed to make them so, for the rest Europeans to come and take them away, to keep them in their Museums unattended for further destruction.
I'm sure that no one of the people that already answered your post intented to be rude with you, But some things are very delicate to handle. Ruins is one of them. |

Ok, according to you, the Parthenon is a ruin, Thission is a ruin, the theatres of Dionysos and Epidavros are ruins. And you are supposed to "love" literature. Why did you chose Greece instead of Miami, where you can find both beaches and (non ruin) concrete skyscrapers? |

The ideal place for you, maybe would be Las Vegas''.
At least there, there are not ''ruins'' |

The ruins you mention are great monuments, that give sense to the existence of the human species. There are also wonderful monuments (art and architecture) which are not ruined, of the Byzantine, Neoclassical and modern period, and vernacular buildings. But besides them, Athens and Thessaloniki have many more things to do. There are many festivals of drama, music of all eras, art exhibitions and museums, photography exhibitions, dance performances, and a lot more. Since you don't seem to appreciate culture much though, I doubt you will find any of that interesting, so I guessyou will be one of those tourists who go to an al inclusive hotel and will see nothing of the country they are visiting. I am sorry for that, and I hope you do change your mind once you come to Athens, because the monuments you can visit here are beyond the limits of perfection!
Also, I would like to let you know that if you are not into "ruins" much you should not go to Athens and Thessaloniki, but go straight to an island, however you will find no place in Greece that doesn't combine the amazing sea with culture and heritage. You will find the best sea on teh islands, though, but do go to visit the monuments too, it is so worth it! |

As a travel agency I can suggest you a lot of places to visit....
1) Beaches
There are great beches in Chania-Crete,in Syros, and my sugestion is my favorite island...Milos
2) Literature
It depends from what kind of literature do you prefer
You can visit Zakynthos were some of our greatest poets and were born, grown up and wrote theis Great poems there such as Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos
Or you can also visit Crete were there are different types of literature- one great poet that has lived there is Kazantzakis
3) Vegeterian
As for that part, there are places all over the country only for vegetarians, but in any reastaurant you can find a lot of really tasteful things to eat such as salads, burgers from vegetables, and great pastas...
For any other help, just contact me or e mail me...

Well Athens is a big city and it becomes even bigger during nights. Go to Poseidonos av. wich is at the south part of Athens. It is next to the sea and it has many beautifull clubs and caffes. You can either chill or drink while looking at the scenery. Also you can go to a summer cinema. Yoy could wach a movie (the plays are with subtitles) in open air , feeling the breeze, smoking if you like or drinking a beer, having the strs ubove. It;s like you are in a beautifull yeard.
