oh, a number of things. Among the most interesting:

1) Fighting for independence. We are quite good at it though we hardly ever win.

2) First Constitution in Europe and second in the world

3) Never giving up

4) Not giving up their identity even after over a century of partition

5) A few Nobel prize winners

6) Free election since XVII century

7) Breaking the code of Enigma - nazi coding mashine

8) A king who convinced a person, trying to make an attempt on his life to give up those ideas and try to be better a man and start everything over - it worked since Pułaski is not the best known killer in the US history

9) Husaria - historical winged riders

10) Polish pilots fighting in the battle for England

11) being the most cheeful country on the east side of Iron Veil

12) Lech Wałęsa and Solidarity movement

13) Breeding great horses ( http://www.janow.arabians.pl/pl/aktualnosci/ )

14) Ability to live in the most absurd reality possible

15) Mikołaj Kopernik (Copernicus) with his De revolutionibus orbium coelestium

16) Music (Chopin, Wieniawski...)

And of course much, much more...

Fighting on our side in W.W.2. They contributed a lot with their free Polish air force that fought in the battle of Britain. Their army fought in the desert against Rommel. They are a good nation with a lot of pride.

Hospitality. I was surprised when I traveled around Poland to discover that a people with such a tragic history can be so nice and friendly. The like to drink beer, eat sausages, sing, dance and...treking...that people like to walk on the mountanside. I encourage every one to visit Poland. Krakow, Lublin, Zamosc, Wroclaw, Zakopane (Trata mountains) are great but don't forget small town Poland. And dont forget to say djenkue...(thank you) every time you get a Zywiec beer.

Solidarity, the union organisation that brought the end of communism in Poland. Poland can probably, be credited for the breakdown of the soviet union and the end of soviet based communism.

That and cuisine based on boiled cabbages.

Their heroic behavior against the Germans. When the Germans invaded Poland in '39 with Stuka's (war planes- Sturzkampfbomber) and tanks, the Polish Lancers rode their horses on the battle field, knowing they were going to die a certain death. That's bravery all the way.

You have to remember how some of the men fought against the Germans during the Battle of Britain - Polish and Czech pilots flew with the RAF, and as payback they fought hard and scored quite well against the Luftwaffe!

Remember in the Bridge too Far, they used Polish soldiers in that too - unfortunately played by Gene Hackman - bad Polish accent!

You will fine at least one of each of these in every house hold so that means they are famous.

They are also famous for being unfortunate enough to be located in the middle of Europe where idilogical wars have taken place. Many of them have died and still nothing really sorted.

Afghanistan is similar to Poland in that respect.

All my male friends say Polish girls are really nice looking. Unfortunately nobody in the west has ever seen an Afghan lady enough to decide how she looks. Just two eyes through a slit in the vail.
