Brugge, Belgium - beautiful city, lovely canals
Venice, Italy - pretty neat to see how the city is sinking
Baccarach, Germany in the Rhine river valley - half timbered homes and a very quaint, beautiful german village right on the river. Take a tour of local wineries and LOTS of castles along the Rhine.
Not a city but the southern part of Germany is just beautiful especially in the spring and summer.
I could probably list 8 but you've already listed three of my other top ones. |

Barcelona - nice cosmopolitain city with Mediterrean lifestyle, great seafood, and nice mixture of modern and old architecture (Barrio Gotico and Las Ramblas, Sagrada Familia, La Perdera, Parc Guell - all Gaudi), and Magic fountains (in front of Catalan National Museum).
Seville - Home of the tapas, beautiful architecture (influence of Moorish/Arabic - La Giralda and Real Alcazar), Plaza Espana (site of the 1929 World Fair), lots of nice parks and gardens.
Toledo - Fortified city high up on a hill (can get up there by escalator - kind of cool), demasquine art and jewellry, fresco by El Greco in Cathedral, influence of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions (they apparently lived harmoniously within the city walls).
Madrid - wonderful parks, pedestrian only areas, fantastic museums (Golden Triangle of Art: Prado - in my opinion one of the best art galleries I've seen in Europe - everything there is a masterpiece, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza - excellent collection of primitive Flemish and Italian painters plus impressionist, and Reina Sofia gallery - actually never got to see that one so don't know what to tell you).
Santiago de Compostella - fortified city, 3rd most important Catholic pilgrimage site (Cathedral is very impressive) in the world, interesting architecture, again great seafood.
Bruges - Amsterdam but on a smaller scale (minus the Red light district and the hashish:)) - beautiful architecture, quiet, picturesque canals, great food! Also worth visiting the Memling museum - great examples of primitive Flemish art work.
Brussels - Grand Place!! - surrounded by old guild houses , restaurants, and bars (most of which brew their own beer and offer a choice of close to 200 different types, including fruit-based beers such as Kriek which is with a sour cherry base) - also great square to lay down on and star gaze, Mannekin Pis, friendly people, great food, great structures.
Amsterdam - The city that never sleeps - Ha! Whatever happens in Amsterdam, stays in Amsterdam:) - Canals, Red light district (phallic fountains), bicycle rider's paradise, unique architecture (houses squished like sardines along the canals), Anne Frank museum, Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum (highlight on Rembrandt and contempories, and other Dutch art, including Delft pottery), smoked eel (believe me it's good!)
I could go on and on, but you only asked for eight...oh but let me just add one more - Heidelberg (in Germany) - university town, gateway to the Rhine Valley, nice walk up above the town with panoramic view (Philosopher's walk).
Wait...one more...Salzburg (Austria): birthplace of Mozart and just simply gorgeous - baroque architecture set against a beautiful mountain landscape (UNESCO world heritage site along with Santiago de Compostella, Toledo, and many other places in Europe) - also known for the famous Marzipan Mozart chocolates. |
