Amsterdam IS spectacular for its mix of the cultural with the radical, seeping with history and laced throughout the city's beautiful canals, but you may also want to visit the Hague and Rotterdam, Groningen, Maastricht.... For "typical Dutch" country scenes, Vollendam and Zaanse Schans attract a lot of tourists from Amsterdam. In Enkhuizen, there's an open air museum that has reconstructed a village with houses from all over. In the Spring, you'll want to visit the Keukenhof in Lisse to see the tulips. Also, Gouda and Edam are the famous cheese-making towns. Delft is supposed to be one of the prettiest towns in NL (it's near the Hague) and it's where that blue and white porcelin comes from. The famous water control structures are in the island province of Zeeland. And, finally, you can find two major amusement parks in NL: The former Six Flags Wallabi World less than an hour from Amsterdam and the fairy tale-oriented De Efteling in the south of the country.

the van gogh museum and the ryksmuseum right next to it. Also, check out the town squares in Liedsplein at night. street performers put on their own little shows and then pass the hat for money. They are usually very entertaining.

Don't forget the Voldelpark just a street or two from Leisplein.

There is an exhibit (for lack of a better word) called "Madurodam" or something like that. It is a miniature city. You have to see it to understand it but you will not be disappointed. Its cool.

Visit some smaller places like Haarlem. Close to Amstedam, Schiphol airport and the beach. Fantastic church (Bavo) with spectacular organ. And the Teyler museum (oldest in the Netherlands) and Frans Hals museum. also a very 'walkable' city . No car needed. But there are many other mid-size cities to go to (and often preferred above Amsterdam. Avoid Rotterdam). Examples: Bergen op Zoom (South-west), Maastricht (deep south-east), Nijmegen (east), Leiden (about 30 miles south of Haarlem and Schiphol airport)

I personally like "Madurodam", near The Hague. It's the smallest city in the world! The flower fields are beautiful to see.
Amsterdam is interesting. Rotterdam is modern. Delft is cozy.
Like most countries there's a lot to see and to experience.

Have a great time there!

It's all wonderful. You'll find, no matter where you go, that people are polite, helpful, and extremely gracious. The Hague was fascinating, and I really enjoyed a few day trips through the countryside. The architecture is endlessly entertaining and unlike anything in North America.

Food is excellent everywhere, with many healthy choices, lots of ethnic restaurants, and decent prices. There is a vast selection of wine, beer, and spirits you won't have seen in the US. Take advantage of the opportunity to try the many cheeses that are illegal in the US. Most are delicious. It's also worth sampling some of the superb imported hashish that's available in the coffeeshops.

You could spend a week in Amsterdam without running out of things to do. There are many amazing museums, from the Anne Frank house to the Van Gogh. The flower market is beautiful, too.

amsterdam is absolutely great. there are a ton of things to do and it sso beautiful. i would recommend taking a bike tour or renting bikes and riding around. there are plenty of great restaurants too. one of the highlights of my trip there was the Anne Frank House(Huis). Though the experience was very sad, it was very eye opening and amazing to be there and see it for your self. Also, the Van Gogh muesuem is spectacular! i usually dont like musuems but this one is small so you can get through it in like an hour. and plus the paintings are all familliar.

hope this helps and enjoy your trip!!

Gouda is a nice very small town, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Scheviningen (in the summer) awesome beach and tons of beachfront restaurants.
Go to Madurodam (minitaure village) and there is also another town that has no cars, just boats....crap can't remember the name!
