TutSki YanCheg
we all like people.. no matter what
that's what we have in common

Trotsky vs Kerensky- НекIо!
I don't see anything in common at all.

Similarities: both are Muslims (though Iranians are shiite and most Turks are sunni)
Differences: ethnic - one is Turkish the other is persian
language - Turkish is an Ural-Altaic language. Persian is indo-european. i.e. brother/birader, mother/mader, father/peder

During the reign of Ottomans, Persian became the language of the elit and many Ottoman poets, even Sultans wrote poetry in Persian.
About Sultan Selim and Shah Ismail:
Selim lost most of his Turkish blood through inter-racial marriages in the Ottoman palace. So I tend to call him Ottoman, rather than Turkish. His army, which he led against Persia consisted mostly of converted soldiers (janissary). Shah Ismail, on the other hand was of Turkish origin. He ruled Persia at the time. His army commanders, and most of his soldiers were of Turkish origin. Ironic isn't it.

Apart from the above, Turks and Persians do not have much in common. Two different ethnic groups, two different languages.

It is funny, an old woman whose mother was Turkish and father was Iranian explained this to me once. She said that Iranian men write poetry, cause they're big softies inside their hard exteriors and then said this is a good trait for a father, especially when you are the only daughter. She was a very cute and sweet old lady but I guess her opinion won't help you much.

I do not know many Iranians so I would only be guessing if I answered for myself.

yav
no similarities at all. u sud change ur nick

I think it stretches back to early ages where two main lands are defined in iranian mythology. There were two brothers who walked different ways and settled at different places namely:
Iran: Land of the aryan
Turan: Land of tur
Concerning the language: Our language is almost the same as the azeri's. Iranian language is kind of indo germanic so it is quite different. But think about this: Shah Ismail and Yavuz Sultan Selim fought against each other. Yavuz sultan selim's poems (diwan) were written in persian. Shah Ismail's diwan was in turn, written in a flawless turkish! That should give you an idea about the cultural exchange and the common heritage.

EDIT: The arabs here (UAE) think that I am iranian although I don't have any iranian in my bloodline :)

EDIT2: That all being said, I really don't really like your administration and their attitude towards azeris. I think Iran will pay the price od discriminating and alienating them really really soon.

Iranians speak Farsi, Turks speak Turkish. But there are words in each language that got adopted by each language. Like it would happen between French and German or so...

Both populations are Muslim, Iranian with a Shiite majority, Turkey with a Sunni majority.

The Iranian regime is not the same as secular Turkey.

Also the Turkish and Iranians dress differently. Hijab is a law in Iran. Majority of Turkish people on the other hand dress according to the fashion of the day.

We may eat similar foods, but Turkey also has a great number of fish dishes and greens unique to its own lands...

Iran is currently having a dilemma with the US over nuclear energy. Turkey has no such dilemma or conflict with the US.

Iranians speak "farsi", in Turkey "turkish" is spoken. Both are Muslim countries, with the difference that in Turkey most of the population are "sunni", in Iran "shia".

Both Muslim but there are lots of difference in practice... They are neighbour, and the rest of the answer is the same as any other two nation.

rescuer_004
The most common element is that they are both principally muslim countries. Though in my experience Turkey tends to be very modern and open to diversity within the Muslim faith where Iran tends to be, at least externally, much more strict. About 25% of the Iranians speak dialects of Turkik language which is similar to Turkish. I think that what many of the other responders are missing is the openness or diversity that I have experienced in Turkey. They seam to much more tolerant of Christian views and other religions.

no languages are different even though there are many words that have crossed the border both ways, the structure of the languages are different....

culture is of course similar to a point since they are both mostly muslim countries but the way they are ruled seperates the cultures, because it greatly affects daily street life
