So you are out to steal us? Somehow i can see no man complaining about that :p.
Seriously though, although i am not in the mind of Greek women, i guess they are more jealous (afraid or even hostile?) against women from Russia and ex - communistic block countries. Quite a lot of them are very beautiful and look for a Greek man to marry, and many divorces were taken due to them in the past years. |

Honestly?
We think that British people are split in two categories :
The ones with good manners and the ones with bad manners.
The ones with good manners, come on over, spend their time peacefully, have their fun, recharge their batteries and go back home to continue work and life.
The ones with bad manners, come on over, not only they are drunk 24/7 (its no big deal actually, its vacation time anyway) but when sober they cause a lot of trouble keeping police officers really busy).
PS. I have never heard though that British women are coming over to steal us... from our women.
PS2. Do I count as steal-able material or will I be spared?
I am married to an American woman... :-)
Juuuust kidding! ;-) |

Well I wonder what do you mean by "friendly" really...No matter what I do think Greeks are honest, warm and direct people. But without the behavioral stereotypes Brits use in their daily lives.
Then again, Greek men are definitely not running after some (orca fat) drunken British girls (nothing personal here). But beyond that, Brits socialize only with each other in some rundown places (Faliraki, Malia) and hardly ever meeting with the locals. And then Greeks avoid tourists (especially the Brits) and the places they usually spend their holidays as hell (makes sense when dealing with the 18-30 groups).
So it all depends of course on the person but just saying you are a Brit won't really trigger any smiles...thanks to those Brits being here before you :). The British foreign minister was just few weeks ago in Greece in order to discuss with the local Greek authorities exactly this point: the bad behavior of Brits on Greek islands and its impact on local communities. I also must say that a number of British tourists that are coming in Greece feel very embarrassed of these phenomena. This summer, I saw people from a Greek resort in Crete closing the national road and protesting against British tourists. I have never seen such a thing in my life before.
Just google "British & Greece" on any newspaper in the UK and you will see what I mean. It's a big issue in Greece.

Greeks have preconceived ideas about Brits (how we look, accents etc) just as Brits have about Greeks (etc).
Stealing the men comment - I've heard this a few times from older women when British girls marry Greek men (like me).
The truth : Greeks don't really 'like' any nationalities apart from their own - but even that is sometimes not the case: People from Preveza don't like people from Lefkada, people from Arta are not too keen on Preveza people etc etc etc.
It depends on why you are in Greece. If you are not a drunken tourist, then of course you are liked. If you are working here, are married, studying and well behaved and respectful - then you'll be liked (maybe not by Mother-in-law but that doesn't mean it's because you are British - you're a daughter-in-law ... that's enough)
Not everyone likes foreigners - no matter what nationality they are - just like in UK. I have found over the years that men are more open to foreigners (both sexes) than women in Greece. Men always seem to be more open minded and accepting of our differences. We can be a bit over-powering for the average Greek woman (of my age) that has been brought up differently to us.
I am offended by the 'fat' comment by another answerer - not all of us are fat, drunk etc some of us can definitely give the locals a run for their money ..... and failing all that we still have brilliant personalities to fall back on. |

he he that's funny!you don't steal our men!and after all Greek are considered to be good Lovers so...we understand you!!!!!
JUST KIDDING GUYS!!!!!
Concerning me,I ADORE BRITS!When i went to Plaka for a walk, and stopped to eat in a taverna, opposite to me was a british couple and they were sooo well mannered and they made me such a good impression that i took a photo of them!!!!!
And generally, when i see Brits i always feel so happy, not knowing the reason!!!
But when it comes to intoxicated British youngsters coming to Greece only to have fun(or even sex) and wreak havoc ...then I don't like them!
They damage our tourism and boost a negative image of Greece as a tourist destination...For example you will see naked british tourists wandering around the streets of Malia(crete) and Kos and Lagana(Zantes) by making nasty gestures and wearing provocative underwears and being drunk! So you cannot compare the British couple that i mentioned previously with these drunk ones....

Greeks like the English a lot. The stereotype they have for them is that they drink a lot and that they are not very warm (in feelings or sexually), but people who have met English people know that the latter isn't true! (lol, I don't say anything about the former).
OH, you do realize that Cortophagus above is a troll who hates Greece and is just trying to defame her posing as Greek! |

This is the first time I ever hear that British women are about to steal Greek men! I thought British people considered all Greek men gay! LOL!
Anyways, I know British women married to Greek men and when they do something strange their in laws' reactions is 'oh, she is English' (translated: they do things like that in England, you are ignorant, OUR daughter in law is from England!)
Personally I never say British, German etc are like this or the other way. I don't much like stereotypes. I could tell you about my British friends (who I know very well) but that gossip and I don't like gossip either!!! LOL |
