I think is about 5 gcse or equivelent to join the merchant navy nowadays.Try merchantnavy.org, clydemarine or safe ship training group.They will find a company to sponsor you through a cadetship which takes about 3 years and at the end of it youll be an officer in the mechant navy.

5 gcses, good attitude, ability to live in cramped quaters, no seasickness, good eyesight, be physically fit, dont mind being away from home for at least 6 months at a time. the ability to put up with bulshit. good team work skills, and finally and most importantly to ability to swim incase the worst happens lol
