We are all Slavic so we also share similar traditions (folk stores, dances,...) and our languages may sound very much the same to foreign people (though they aren't really).
We all suffered during 2WW and we are (unfortunately) all known as bunch of Communists... |

Slavic culture.
Some of them have Cyrillic alphabet.
Many of 'em had been communist.
Eastern European.
But Russia and Ukraine were Soviet and Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia were part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
All of them have been independent since 1990's. |

Well all countries you mentioned are Slavic (with an exception for Muslims living in Bosnia who are not Slavic, but they are appx. 1/3 of Bosnians). You could also add to this list Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
This also implicates that languages spoken in those countries are also Slavic and have a lot in common, therefore they may sound similar to a person who is not Slavic. Cultures in those countries are different, but againg have some common parts. Suprisingly religions are different - some are dominantly Roman Catholic, some are Orthodox.
What else? Historically all these countries belonged to the Soviet block during the Cold War, although their political situation was different (Ukraine was a part of USSR, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia were parts of Yugoslavia, Poland was a separate country but under Soviet influence). |
