It's easy to fall back on the stereotypes attributed to any nation but I think the majority of English people nowadays don't have any negative ideas regarding Germans. Unfortunately the reason for this is rather than any abandonment of negative, outdated preconceptions, it's more to do with adopting the American attitude of simply being unaware of any nations outside of one's own.
P.S. I went to Germany and had tons of fun. I'm also a Brit. |

Some people discriminate against them because they blame them for the Holocaust, but they hate it as much as we do. Most are forgive and forget though. |

In this Englishmans view, I'm quite fond of Germany and of the German people. Good culture, vibrant cities and excellent scenery. |

I don't have anything against Germany. I'd love to visit some day. Yeah, there's Hitler & ww2, but the current generation didn't do it, so ....... |

Personally, I love it. The people are really friendly and very kind and generous. it's well organised and clean and they make great wine, if you bother to look for it. I always feel really comfortable there. It's nicer than england in lots of ways. |

Unfortunately most English people believe what they are told by their parents who were swamped with propaganda after WWII when the allies wanted to justify the rebuilding of Germany as a bastion of capitalism against the USSR.the more educated realise that the Germans got away with some of the worse crimes in the history of humanity and chose to believe the Nazis were a minority. The modern Germans are arrogant and obviously endorse the 'Master Race' doctrine of Hitler from the way they behave towards other nationalities. |

Never been, but my boyfriend has and said they were very friendly, hospitable people and the scenery was beautiful full of fairy tale castles.
Shame about the Nazis but Hitler was Austrian (nothing against the Austrians either.) And Ann Frank was part German. Britain didn't get to be an empire by being all nicey nicey so we must have had some nasty characters in our history. |

I have never been, so I cannot comment about it. I do think people should let the past lie though ( war, slavery,e.t.c. ) Why do you need to keep bringing up these awful catastrophies? None of us were around then, so are not responsible. |

Hi Vers99
I have lived all over Germany whist serving with the British Army of the Rhine. I found the German people are a proud nation. There cleanliness of their country can knock ours into a cocked hat. The German people have respect for authority ie, police ,fire and ambulance etc. Try saying "NO" to the GCP (German civil police) You'll get a bit of a shock, trust me lol lol .
I found the elderly were more likely to be a bit "frosty" if any thing as it was they who remembered ww2 more than most.
Yes they do have a sense of humour but it's not like ours. Try the Munich beer feast it's fantastic (things to do before you die) you'll not regret it, promise.
To finish off. I do not think we should go into Europe. We have lived as we are since the ww2 and have had no problem with it so far. My philosophy is if it's not broken don't fix it.
Peace to all. Lenny |

Do you mean English , or British ?? If you mean British then I feel they are like most other nations and have some very nice people and others you would not want to be in the same room as . But that holds true for every race on the planet , although it may be a but more difficult to find the friendly ones in some countries at the moment |

I was in Germany for a few weeks a few months ago and i loved it, Berlin is a great city and the black forest is simply stunning.
I spoke to a german man and i asked him whether he felt guilt about the war and what had occured, he said -why should he feel guilty for something he did not do, he said it was better to move on.
Germans and Germany are great and although we must never forget what happened in WWII and WWI lets not blame the current Germans.
Plus the beer is V good, the metal bars are V scary and the place is stunningly clean
and the trains run on time! ;o) |

I'm not English, I'm Irish, but I have nothing but respect for Germany and the German people. In fact, I learn German at school and I would love to go to Germany at some stage.
Of course, there is they whole WW2 thing, which people seem to blame on every single German person which is ridiculous. Do enough research and you'll see it was only a few oddballs who managed to get into power in the 1940s the supported the Holocaust. |

I think it's a brilliant place, friendly people, beautiful countryside, and proud culture. I lived in Stuttgart and Munich, and saw much of the Allgauer and Bavaria. I was never treated with anything other than respect and friendliness, and saw and learned much German culture. Weisswurstfruhstuck was a particular highlight!
Reading the entries above, it's a shame that many Brits can't differentiate between Nazism and the German people; few people are aware that to crititcize or refuse to fight for Hitler meant a trip to Dachau or a labour camp. The thing that REALLY ticks me a off as an Englishman is the morons who follow our national football team who think that Germany is still "the enemy".
People who know their history will know that until the late 1800's Britain and Germany were very close allies, and had been for hundreds of years. |

Not a lot but i hear they have very efficient motorways (autobahn). |

Well I'm currently learning German so I can't think that they're that bad! :) I used to think that we shouldn't be in the European Union with them because of the amount of jews slaughtered under Hitler's reign but now I've (obviously) had a big change of heart.
What Germany has done in the past should bear no reflection on who they are now. We English have done some pretty despicable things in the past as well.
And we should all know how easy it is for a nation of people to be brainwashed into condoning and supporting the atrocious acts of a misguided fool - we see it with the USA and George W Bush. |
