What do turkish people think about Istanbulian Greeks and Istanbulian Armenians? |
Having spend time in Istanbul among armenians, turks and greeks, a question came through my mind...what is the opinion that turkish people have about armenians and greeks that were born and lived in Turkey?
Do you think they are alike?
if not, what are the differences between them?
which of both cultures you would be more more positive to?? armenian or greek (of istanbul of course)
Thanks a lot

Merhaba Tolia' cigim,
The Istanbul Greeks and Armenians are very elite people. Mostly well educated and sophisticated. We don't think them as 'foreigners'. We are all the same: Turkish.
My aunts friend Eli ( Eleni) "Teyze" ( Aunt Eli ) helped her during my aunts grandsons birth prayers, weddings etc, while my aunt helped her for preparations of Easter celebrations.
We are positive to all citizens of our country dear, They add "sugar and spice" to our collective culture :)
BTW, I missed seeing you here, in our section, You should visit more often :) |

Well I grow up with a Armenian boy and his family, because my biological parents are really sux and he was so close to me.
Me and Herman ( hes name .. ) was really close to each other .. I've been seat at around a dinner table with he's family at many times and they care me better than my biological parents.
Herman living at China for now ( reason : business ) but he's family., he's mother and sister still living at very same place and I visit them for bring my best wishes and kiss hers hand ( old tradition .. turks will kiss elders hands for show respect & loyalty ) because she spend so much time and effort to me.
Like a mother who care her own child .. without she's moral & financial and physical support I can't grow up.
Point is there is not much cultural difference between a Muslim Turk and a Armenian Turk or a Christian Turk .. when I kiss her hand she fondle my head like every mother who living at turkey .. or when I visit her for "bayram" (religious festival) she treating candy's like other elders .. she love my girl like a real grandmother. And my girl shows respect and love them like a grandmother and a aunt. Because we told her.
As u see when people spend enough time together many cultural things melt at same frying pan .. life more delicious with this way.
My sister married with a jew, I'm married with a muslim .. I'm a christian and my wife are a muslim .. we had a Armenian grandmother and a aunt .. rofl .. what a mix.
But life better with this way .. funny, and satisfactor. |

For Istanbulites, there's no difference from any other person, because the culture and lifestyle is almost same for everyone who live in Istanbul. I think the only differences are the names, surnames and houses of God. |

nothing special. we believe (and they are, of course) they have no difference than any istanbulian. as ipek mentioned above, they are mostly elite, sophisticated and well-educated people.. |

What's the difference between a turk and a turk anyway? I mean who cares about the religion? I don't understand why you say istanbulian greeks and istanbulian armenians? aren't they all considered and treated as turks? |

I think they're Istanbulians. and for me thats all that matters.
people think that people have to be racist in countries with multiple nationalities but thats not true. for me it was interesting to grow up in Istanbul. In my middle school I got the chance to eat giant chocolate eggs with my armenian friends (paskalya- easter) and I got to hear from my friend Viron who is greek about his vacations to greek islands and Rome. Its much more fun to grow up this way.. I also shared with my jewish friend Manuel his cracker things ( they have a special name but Icant remember it right now). I think of them(armenians and the greeks and the jewish) as my friends, I think of them as an oppurtunity to learn different religions and cultures, and I think of them as proof that people dont have to care about each others religion that much. I went to a private middle school and as Ipek K explained why, they were more people of other religion in my school than in public schools, so they have been a major part of my childhood and I am still very good friend with many of them even though I am a long distance away now... :) |

In my personal opinion, a Turk is a Turk regardless of origin and I have to remind people one more time that being a Turk is constitutional, not ethnic.
When I was growing up we felt it is inappropriate to point to people's differences, be them ethnic or religious. I remember I was ashamed to ask about how they celebrate their holy days even! But then again, (I, being of a family which didn't celebrate holy days traditionally) children of Muslim families didn't question each others' habits, either.
Today, as always, I meet people from different ethnicities everywhere I turn, like Armenian, Rum, Kurd, Avşar, Yörük, Alevi, Laz, Çerkez, Russian and generally people like me only listen up to learn new things. |

Just a note: Greeks of Anatolia are not Turks, they are Turkish citizens but they are Greeks, ethnically and even technically, as a minority. They are not recognised as a religious minority, they are an ethnic minority. Unlike the people of Turkish origin of Thrace, who I accept are also ethnic Turks, but in the treaties they are recognised as a religious Muslim minority, since they are part of a minority that includes also Pomacs and Roma. |

When the Turks think of the Greeks of Istanbul, they wish it could be 1955 again. Remember 1955? |
