Please don't feel stress. You will have a wonderful time as long as you don't worry about "having to poo." Everyone does it, even in GREECE!!! Well, in Greece they do have toilets that flush so don't worry about that..... but don't flush the paper!! The toilets are not equipped for that. You will find a basket or trash receptacle next to the toilet for you to dispose of the used paper. It may seem odd to you, but it's not a big deal!!! Pretend you are going to a summer camp.... LOL..... Really, no big deal...relax, have fun, don't worry, be happy!!! You will have the time of your life, and years from now the thought of not being able to flush the paper will be a fond and quaint memory. Trust me... |

It really is disgusting - but you get used to it - you can't flush the paper down (body waste-yes) put used toilet paper in the bin at the side of the toilet.
I can't understand why we have to do this - our house is only 7 yrs old and still it has the same 'rules'.
Make sure you poo in the hotel toilets and not outside because - unless you are thinking of dining in and visiting the most expensive places in Greece - you'll find that most toilets in tavernas/bars etc have a really low standard of hygiene.
I once though about writing a guide to 'good Greek toilets because as soon as I came across a decent loo - I was compelled to tell all my friends.
I have children who need the toilet for number 2s immediately after eating - so my choice of places to visit is ruled by the 'cleanliness' of the toilets and not the quality of the food.
In fact tomorrow night I am going to a newly refurbished restaurant where I haven't been for years - because of their 'hole in the ground' Turkish toilet - a nightmare when you have daughters! Although the eldest is now used to them - due to the fact the NEW* school toilets are the same!
Don't let the toilets put you off your holiday - although they'd get most restaurants closed down elsewhere - Greece, its scenery, food, beaches, life makes up for them a million times over! AND please don't hold your poo in for 2 weeks - or you'll end up at the local hospital - where they have some of the worst toilets!
If it's also being with your friends in the same apartment that's worrying you - tell them you'll meet them on the beach and stay in your room alone for a few mins. (That's a trick I still use) |

Of course you can flush, but you can't throw paper and sani pads in the toilet, there is a bin next to the toilet and you throw it in there. Simple as that! |

It depends on the sewer system of the building you are.
Older buildings had old sewer systems and flashing paper or other garbage is not allowed.
In newer sewer systems their isn't such a problem. You can through in what ever you like. |

Let's sort this one out once and for all.......
The Greeks invented the lavatory pan........There are ancient public latrines at Korinth......Mr. Crapper invented the flushing toilet.....if you don't believe me look it up!!
The problem with Greek plumbing is that the waste pipes are not as big as other countries and paper and serviettes block the pipes, this is not necessarily just the pipework in your residence but the pipework under the street too. A secondary problem is that in many places there is no main drainage and toilet paper causes a problem with the septic tank particularly the old fashioned sort that was bleached with chlorine.
Newer houses and hotels sometimes have bigger pipework or a different solution to the problem that I will not go into here. There is also some variation locally, here on Crete for instance it is nearly always use the bin.
If your hotel has a sign saying 'Don't put toilet paper down the pan' then don't...And there is no need for embarrassment because everybody has to do the same, and don't worry about what the cleaning staff think they deal with emptying the bins on a daily basis.
Greek toilets always used to be something of a joke but these days I think we probably have the best toilets in Europe and they are certainly cleaner and smarter than many that you will find in bars and restaurants in the UK! |

You cant flush the toilet paper due to the greeks still having a basic toilet system. There system cant deal with the paper. They do have special bins tho that deal with this. All you do after you have done the toilet is take your tissue, put it in a bag and put it in the special bin next to the toilet. This should be emptied every day by the apartment maid. Im going to Corfu in June and i was there a couple years ago and i honestly didnt find it a problem! |

I travel to Greece every year and am always confounded by the toilet rules. You are told not to flush paper because the pipes are too small to handle the paper and you can cause damage. OK, so the poo can pass but a couple pieces of biodegradeablel paper can't???? People in Greece are used to throwing their paper in the bins located next to the toilets and don't particularly get disgusted by the smell that emanates. I personally don't want to see anyone else's "used" tissue left over from number 2 or from a woman who has her monthly friend. I just throw caution to the wind and just throw it in the toilet. I know I'll get slammed for that comment but sorry don't want my in-laws knowing when it's my time of the month - call me crazy. |
