there r countless beautiful things in Crete : the scenery, the sea, the water, the mountains, but the most important is the inhabitants' hospitality than goes back to ancient times....
P.S. there r ugly things as well but the good ones prevail, thank God! |

I have been to Crete once by a huge cruise ship. It was very beautiful! I would recommend it to anyone who loves to travel. I wish I could have gone again. It is the 5th largest island in Greece (who knew?!). The one thing I truely remember about Crete (it was a while back that I had visted) was the vast area from the beach.
It beaches - snorkeling too!, villages and arecheaological sites will keep you busy for many hours!
Visit Crete, you won't regret it:) It's beautiful, as all of Greece is too. |

I was astounded by the clarity of the water - I grew up looking at the Atlantic and there is no comparison.
Also, I enjoyed the availability of fresh, locally grown produce year-round.
The landscape is startling - though I don't know if I'd call it beautiful. |

Even only for Knossos, the city of Minoas, you should visit Crete. |

The variety this "island" has to offer, in terms of culture, landscape, products, people. It is an island, but still you will never get bored. And, as a tourist, I liked the people (however, most non-cretans who live there permanently have a different opinion). I simply adored the purity of the landscape - and I simply hate the idea that a lot of people living there carry a variety of guns, which they actually do use. |

I study at the university of Crete since 3 years and believe me Crete made me feel like home, i enjoyed my time here so much that i decided not to leave when i finish my studies. The unique landscapes, the cretan hospitality, the magnificent beaches, but also the feeling that as soon as i am bored i have so many choices....apart from clubs, cafes, tavernas, and archeological sites, i can combine sea and mountain excursions, i can visit villages that are traditional like Anogia, but i can also go downtown at cosmopolitan Heraklion. I dont know why but i have a feeling that the heart of Greece is beating in Crete... i just love Crete.

I have not been born in Crete but I love it, I go for holidays there for many years, and I have a lot of Cretan friends.
Crete has a variety of beautiful aspects :
1. Nature. On the mountains you can find the most rare species of flowers and animals
2. People. The cretan people hospitality is famous but you must get used to drink "raki" their local product otherwise if you refuse they are offended when they offer it to you.
3. Food . They have a lot of local food cooked in their way. I can assure you they are excellent as well as the salads they use with local herbs.
4. Antiquities. You can see so many places as Knosos , Phaistos etc showing thw Minoan civilization. Also in their museums you can see how was the first greek script (linear A)
5. Music & dance. Their music and the dances are very special (but you will be lucky if you can join a "panigyri" a local fest because music and dances are more authentic there rather than in the tourist shops)
6. Beach. You can enjoy yourself by swimming at clean beautiful beaches depending on what you desire : desert beaches i.e. Psari Forada somewhere at Iraklion or more chaotic beaches with umbrellas at the North of the island.
7. Old legends : there are many and very interesting. For example if you happen to be on the island at the end of May beginning June you can go to fragocastello and try to see whether it is true the legend of Drosoulites
I state herebelow a site (explorecrete) which I consider as one of the best for relative info, and 2 other sites where I have written the legend for Drosoulites of Fragocastello accompanied by a video at Youtube. The legend of Drosoulites is one among several others which are very nice as legends.
I could say more but I have to stop here. These are a few from the beautiful items I find at Crete. |
