the organisation was great!!!!!
even the events were awesome.
the tourists who went to Greece found some really nice people.
the govermnent of Greece did a great job with the all the work for the buildings and stadiums.
so i believe that those were some of the best Olympic games ever.
the events in the start and the end of the Games i believe were great. even the moment with watermelons. those people are a part of our country and they represented us so i didnt have any problem.
also those events showed our civilization and our arts in those hours . so i liked the whole think.
i believe that the latter though event was the best with all the great music etc

They were great. I loved the opening.

Dellarovere
I have to disagree as to the opening and the closing show...
It was absolutely of bad taste....especially the scene with gipsies and their Datsun cars loaded with watermelons...

As for the athletic organisation it was really great....The best ever...

zigzag
It was great, i didnt like so much the ceremonies, but i had watched it from abroad...
A big honour for the country who organised the first Olympic Games..
I am proud to be greek...

They were great, and the opening was the best so far I think. It was the most artistic one. Beautiful.

The greeks are very able to organise. And i can assure you that it was so safely organised...I didnt like the closing ceremony, but the organisation was very good, and of course all the constructions, even though years later, they let many of them being destroyed..
Excuse me but about Olympic games, we are very absolute in our position, since it is an honour for us,and also we give the fire to every country who wants to organise them. Not to mention that Greece is always the first going out at the presentation, as an honourable memebr also...
This means, all the above mentioned, that for us, it was a matter of pride to organise them well.
If there are people who didnt like it, it doesnt amtter, this is preference, it is relative, i also as i said didnt like the closing ceremony...

Olympic games hosted in Athens Greece was a surpise.

2 months prior to the start of the Olympic games all foreign TV channels had made a bad advertising saying that Athens is nor ready to take over the Olympic games. That was the main reason most bookings were made the last moment.

With my identity as a volunteer of the Olympic games I have a personal experience so I can point out the following :
- It was the first time that so many people (independently of age, color, nation, educational level etc) cooperated in an excellent way in order to achieve a good result.
- It was the first time I saw ALL people (including taxi drivers...LOL!!!) to be extremely kind, polite and with good manners (even in the public authorities, policemen etc)
- Athens was very clean and everything was so organized.
- The ceremonies (opening and closing) in an excellent way narrated the Greek history and culture as well as the rich variety of folk dances and colours of every single Greek region. As to the closing ceremony I will not agree with other answerers. The closing ceremony and the gipsies with the car did not show anything more than the reality. Gipsies in the form of small groups live in Greece and some of them are registered as Greek citizens. What it was showed in the Olympic games was the reallity , we can see them going around like nomads and selling their products. Why should we refuse it? Let's remember the b/w movie "Laterna, ftwxeia and filotimo" where part of their life is shown there.
- Excellent was the way that in short pictures it was possible to show a part of the so many Greek traditional way of life, traditional professions, ceremonies etc (fishermen, marriage, songs etc)
- For what concerns security there were no problems
- A lot of huge premises were constructed in a very short period and by a country which had never faced such a big project!!!!
- Finally I have to say that being a volunteer was an excellent experience and the spirit of volunteerism has rised in greece since then.

I really believe that the ancient spirit during these days had returned in Greece (even for a while...for the Olympic Games of 2004!!!)

They were really good, but my expectations were higher. I wanted to see some more emphasis on the importance of olympics to the Greeks. I think Sydney was more sensational. I loved it. I liked the Greece Olympics too, but as I said, I was expecting more to see.

George
Well..for my surprise the neighbours did it very well...I mean ,everything was OK. :-D

They were equal to our history, culture and ancient Olympic games.

I was chuffed to bits because everyone thought we couldn't do it and that it would be a big disaster with all the venues not finished in time - so we showed them that Greeks can organise things on time.

Pity we're all going to be paying taxes for years to come to pay for it all though.

I guess it was all great and fine but then indeed I also was...oh well... surprised to see the "watermelon-Datsun thing" as part of Greece's cool "grandeur"...:).

But all in all these Olympic games had a gorgeous atmosphere largely created by the citizens of Athens. Well done.
