Everyone else is correct. Bram Stoker's character Dracula was loosely based on Vlad Dracul aka "The Impaler" who lived during the 1400s. You can look him up under th ename Vlad Tepes also.
I just got back from a trip to Europe which did include Romania. I went to several cities in Romania with some "Dracula" history:
Sighisoara - where Vlad Tepes was born. That house is still standing and is now a restaurant. Definitely a "tourist trap" but the originalriver-stone floor is still in it and the food is pretty OK. Also, the citadel in the old town is on the Unesco World Heritage List.
Brasov - nice tourist town at the base of a huge mountain. Nice square with decent restaurants and shopping. Use this as you r base for trips to Rasnov (a GREAT fortress built in the 1300s), Bran Castle (aka Dracula's castle, but is way overrated and is really a showcase for Queen Marie's furniture), and Sinaia (which is home to the Monastery and Peles Castle---do not miss this castle!!!).
Also went to Bucharest, which is the capital and most metropolitan city in Romania. There is some great architecture to see as well as world-class museums. The city is dity with lots of stray dogs and children, but there are some cool bars, a jazz club and restaurants that cater primarily to expats and sudents at the university.
If you go, enjoy and have a safe trip! |

I live in Romania. Dracula is the name Bram Stoker gave to one of our voivods who was really cruel even though he was fair. Dracula comes from the nickname or voivod earned "Dracul" which is translated "the devil". This nickname was give to him by the otoman turks after they witnessed a "forest" of impaled turkish prisoners after a battle our voivod won against them. |

The story of count dracula was based on a real transsylvanian count who liked to spear his enemies and put the spears up on a square in the middle of his castle and see them suffer. |

Hello dear!
Well, He was a real person. Around the 15th century, when the Ottomans were attacking the Roman Empire (known as Byzantine) he had to be a diplomat, to protect his nation. Later, when the Ottomans had cleared the Roman Empire and the others around and attacked his region, he took the Ottoman soldiers he had captured and put them on long pols and suffering from pain and the slow death, they were mourning. The Ottoman army walking by this was so afraid and psychologically stroke that they left without even arriving to fight at Transylvania (North Romania, South Moldavia).
Later, much later, some righter and Hollywood made a monster out of his history!
Similar cases (having Hollywood made up stories) we know of many! Like: Christianity is good while Indians and Muslims are bad! Greeks and their philosophers were not that great but had several problems! |

Dracula was based on Vlad Dracul AKA Vlad the Impaler, a Count from the Transylvania area of Romania who liked to impale peasants on sharp poles. "Dracula" comes from "Dracul". |

Dracula films were created because of Vlad the impaler, a real man who drank peoples blood. However Vlad did this not to feed but to make people suffer. |
