What do you like the most about your country's culture? |
I like the things we say in Turkey like eline saglik (health to your hands) to the person who cooked, sihhatler olsun (wish health) after shower or bath, gule gule kullan (it brings you happiness kind of translation) when someone buys something new.
What about you? Additional Details Of course there are many more. For example i like how we take time while eating and talk instead of eating:))) What we call muhabbet:) |

I like that in America you can get about anything at any time. There are so many conveniences and a great variety. This comes from the fact that we have a wide range of cultures, beliefs, economic levels, etc.
Ironically, I feel this fast pace is one of our downfalls too and one of the reasons why I love Turkey so much. In Turkey the individual is the most important. If you are in trouble people drop whatever they were doing and come help you. I also like that they respect their elders and greet everyone when they come into a room. Turks have a great understanding of what is important in life - people!!
And just like you said, I like that Turks have great phrases that they use at specific times. One of my favorites is "kolay gelsin." In America when we see someone working we either ignore them, make some comment on how hot the weather is, or say something sillly like, "Take it easy." I'm going back to Turkey in a few months and I can't wait! |

I like the simplicity of Greek people specially those who live in smaller cities and villages
I like the tradition that when you go to a house as a misifir :))))
-as a guest, they offer you food, sweets, coffee, drinks etc! and they force you to eat them ! hehe
I like when we sit down to drink coffee and we do it as it is the most important thing in the world! then we talk about all matters in life, world, our country, man, woman, life and death! :D
I like when we go to social gatherings, wending, Baptisms, etc we look around and do gossip about the clothing, hair, make up of the others and we miss the reason why we were gathered there!!!! :D
I like the kindness and good will of Greek people
besides you know, we are so much alike ! :))
Regards to Turkey!
you are in my heart |

As a child I remember visiting my grandmother and spending some time with her during summer vacation ( I guess my mom wanted her peace and quiet for a while, but that is an other story!). My grandma lives in a small village. Not a day passed by without other people from the village coming by the house, having dinner with us, enjoying a cup of coffee and a nice chat with grandma, borrowing salt & eggs for their cooking, bringing homemade sweets for us children....I just love the way Greeks keep their homes & hearts open...And trust me, as I've travelled a lot, it is rare really.... |

I will tell you what I dislike: Animosity, fanatism and bad manners, expressed often at the wrong time and place.
As in my question about lighting a star for Pavarotti's memory where several "answerers" expressed their personal feeling with thumbs down, showing disrespect both to Pavarotti's memory and me.
I feel deep shame for them, both as Greek and Italian.... |

well america is too diverse for many of the aspects of our culture to apply, but i like how most people in america have the instinct to help people in need and usually without regard to themselves. |

- Chattiness. Even the taxi drivers are chatty! But it's in a sincere way, they talk as if they have known you for years lol.
-Cheerfulness. People are happy here. Most importantly they love to "laugh".
-I love talks opening with "N'olcak bu memleketin hali?" everybody acts as if they are political advisers. They all "save" the country in a couple of sentences.
-Local pazars; "ikizlere takke" (very creative indeed, I doubt it is a part of our culture but anyway ;p )
- Pouring water after the cars to wish them a safe trip.
-The way that people still treat their children like they are little girls or boys even if they are 50 years old.
-I can pretend to eat delicious food on the insistence of our host. So it isn't risky to say "Umm, I'm full" if you are embarrassed, the host will surely offer some more and you'll say "Ah ok then, since you insist only a little more..."
- Holidays, especially in Ramazan when you get to eat all those candy and chocolate and when you visit the elderly and kiss their hands to receive money from them. (At least I was doing it for money. Hey I'm just being honest :p)
-How can I forget? Beyaz Peynir- Ince belli bardakta cay ve simit uclusu :) |

I have nothing to say to people when I arrive or leave the lunch table at work, and I feel awkward, so I say 'enjoy your meal' only when I am leaving.... AND NOW EVERYONE SAYS IT TO EVERYONE!!!! We now all welcome each other to work every morning when it is normal custom to just say hello here. We are becoming Turkafied.
I like cheese burgers and comedy movies. |

Mmmm. If I go for the unspoiled characteristics, I like the honesty (like giving back the millions a customer has lost in a cab), helpfulness (people would go out of their way to help a complete stranger), diversity (language, food, life styles... you can't find such diversity everywhere), even the sincere religious belief.
I dislike the recent fanaticism in politics and belief. I think these arise from lack of education and worldview, and are provoked for political purposes. Sadly, fanaticism seems to be on the rise everywhere, including the so-called civilized Western world and decent arguments get drowned in the process. |

Every answer I can think of just points out the fact that there are so many sub-cultures in the United States. I'm from the South, which y'all can 'magine ain't nuthin' like bein' frum the Northwest.
So, what I like best about my region's culture is the food - blackeyed peas, mustard greens, okra and tomatoes, and McDonald's ;) |

For America I'd have to say...wait give me a minute on this one, it's VERY hard...ok, I like that the US has tons of fast food and that it's everybody's fat guilty pleasure to eat.
For Turkey, I would have to say the tight family bonds. You definitely wouldn't be able to find that here in the US. |

Ok,what i like about my country's culture in Lebanon is that,we are very open minded and very self confident and we dont allow anyone to insult or put us down.
We have high manners,we love to live life every second and dont like to waste our time!
WE are very out going ppl and we are the only country in the Middle East that we are not strict like the others!!
Us Lebanese always like to get and buy the latest things, its very common now,for example:cars, cell phone and etc...
We are most popular in our Lebanese sweet which is called "El Hellab",u can only find his store in Tripoli (The second city of Lebanon)ppl come from other cities in Lebanon and coutries just to taste and order his sweets!!
Oh i forgot 1 thing,we know how to dress the best!! |
