I've never been to Russia, but as a nation that claims itself to be the epitome of virtue, we need to extend the olive branch to the Russian people and its government. No body wants war, yet this prevailing attitude of hate and distrust will only reignite the cold war and the arms race that had dominated Russia's policies in the last 50 years, following WW2. We need to open dialogues with the common Russian citizens to prove to them we're not the "evil capitalist who embraces a life of decadence," which is how the government's propaganda minister portrayed Americans during the cold war years. When ever Russia faces moments of crises, such as the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown of April 1986, we should show concern for the common Russian citizen living close to the nuclear plant, and offer direct assistance of medical aid to treat the victims.

We need to send a clear message to the Russian people that we're not their mortal enemies !!

It's fantastic.

As with the US, don't judge the general population by the antics of their power-mad president.

Oscar: What about the millions who still live in Russia and would never leave? My boyfriend is Russian and I can't convince him to leave. You're really not qualified to call Russia a 'piece of crap' unless you've been there, although I think you're probably the kind of American who think every country besides the US is a 'piece of crap'.

I love because is beauty, clean, people take care the country and touristic places, I believe is one of the treasures of the world.

Russia is based on collectivism (fast dissolving now) and USA is based on individualism.
They are two incompatible systems.

Russians could live in USA for job, investments, higher living standards but they usually miss "community feelings".
They do not have "prazdnik" in USA.

Americans could live in Russia too and if they speak Russian and admitted in "collective" - they might start understand
correctly Russian lifestyle after 10 years.

I think it's special country,

I mean it has her unique style in everything,

I like old Russian writers , Russia had a good culture , of course there were bad times in the history , but I hope Russia will come again better than b4 ,

I think the weather of Russia has a role in her culture,

Wish u all a happy new year,

I've never been there, but I do know some Russians. When someone says 'Russia', I think of their great musical heritage and the beautiful scenery. Very arts oriented society. I find the Russians that I meet to be very nice and warm people, not at all like the stereotypical 'alcoholic, drunk, abusive household' that many say they are. They're civilised and caring, and they're friendly! I personally would want to travel there someday, if only to get a glimpse of the culture. And I'd want to learn some Russian too.

cool country some people say its cold but its actually not that cold just in the north near siberia. in the south of russia its acutaly warmer than canada! The russian personality depends on the person - some are rude and treat others like and crap and others are kind hearted and generous(dont boo me - ive lived in russia) like other have said its not right to call russia a 'peice of crap' if you havnt experienced it. lots of places in russia are 'crappy' but most are beautiful and the scenery is wonderful. but thers a lot of pverty. russia would be a much richer and free country if the government would change. the problems happening in russia (corruption)are mostly because of the government and its crimes. like i said, dont boo me - its a fact of life

dabu
i've been living here for 4 years now
and to be honest when i first got here i thought "wow, its so beautiful"
got to the other side of town and just melted...
i hate it here...people are so damn rude...and the cold could kill...most of the russians are so unfriendly...very racist...but i live with it!!
awesome that i go to an international skul...cuz at the end of the day i have one russian friend and the rest are from all over the world...*laughs* cool huh

I have never been there though I want to visit and learn Russian since I like the language and the martial art Sambo. The history is really interesting.

BUT I have to agree with what Oscar said, every Russian I asked said they never want to go back and hate it (Ukrainians say the same thing). But in case it is something personal I never bother to ask why they don't want to go back.

Just me again ☺
Full of corruption,and cold.

To start with, I don't think about Russia cuz I got more exciting things to think about.

TO KATYA - Listen, I've been to Russia, moreover, I've lived there for a year and half - it is a crappy country to live in, and since my last visit, I've never ever wanted to go back.

The Positronic Pimp
I still think of her as a re-labelled Soviet Union, fondly. I wish China would rise faster to level against US Go-It-Alone unilateralism.

Russia is poor and corrupt and couldnt compete with the US.

I know so many people that left Russia and came to the United States for reasons of poverty, religious freedom, and to escape persecution.

When I ask them if they ever want to go back and visit, each one very firmly says that they will never go back. They hate the place.

I know a doctor, who practices here in the US, that was forced to shovel coal in Russia. The government blacklisted him and he was not permitted to practice medicine. Now he lives in the US and can enjoy freedom.

And please dont even try to pretend that Vlad Putin is some great leader, while President Bush is horrible. Its actually quite the opposite.

----
To clear up any confusion, Russia is an independent nation. The modern equivalent to the USSR is the CIS (Comonwealth of Independent States) which include Russia and all the nations that made up the USSR (Belarus, Moldova, Ukrane, Georgia, Armenia, etc).

xtragnarrrlly
That it isn't really called Russia-It was The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics-or The USSR-when I was in grade school around 20 years ago. I don't know what it's called now. I've heard it's hell on earth and everybodys poor.
