just tell your friends not to keep anything in their back pockets when they're walking on the streets and to avoid getting into the deep, dark parts of the city. you know how in movies it's bad to walk down dark alleys? well that's true in russia.
it's a really good country to be in, in terms of education. they are very smart people. some of the best scientists came from russia.
russians have never ever known good living styles like in america so you can't expect it to be as warm and cozy as you would if you were going on a trip to the usa. but if they are just going to get an apartment it shouldn't be that bad.
i don't think the cost of living is any more than in america right now.
security isn't so bad as long as they don't mess around with the mafia.
and i wouldn't recommend going and eating in restaurants! |

I live in Russia. There are some American students in my University, & they don't want to leave)))
If you go to live in Russia, i advise you not to go to the big cities, like Moscow or St. Petersburg, but to choose some small town, like mine))) |

I had a friend that studied in Russia some 10+ years ago. He said it was one of the best places he had ever visited. Today, I'm reading about some of the unrest that going on, but there's unrest here in the states as well. I guess if you do your homework, build a list of safe places to visit, and stay while you study abroad, you'll be fine. I can't over emphasize be safe! When I traveled abroad, I believe I brought back a wealth of knowledge, and created a better understanding of how the US is so much more different then other countries around the world. I feel you'll get an appreciation for the US that you may not have had before. Good luck to ya! |

I used to live and i went to college in Russia (back then - Soviet Union)
My son is going to american college right now.
As of my experience and far as i can compare two systems in terms
of security, quality of education, quality of life and bunch of other basic things, i can only say - i would NOT like my son to study in Russia, especially in big cities, like Moscow. |

In terms of culture, your friends education will be advanced. University wise, it will be about the same as any decent school here. I can't agree with most of the answers enough about big cities. Moscow has one of the highest cost of living averages in the world, on par with London, New York, LA, or Tokyo. The Russian Mafia is extremely violent. This has been documented in numerous expose's on world television. Now, that said, the people you meet in most of the smaller cities will greet you enthusiastically. The genuineness of how you will be treated will come as a complete shock to an American unaccustomed to it. Stay in chain restaurants and friends flats until you can read the menu at a regular restaurant. The service can be rotten, like the food. But any place with any amount of tourism will be better.
I went to Belarus in 2000 and four big macs, four drinks, four fries, three coffees and one ice cream set me back $8.40. Booze is cheap if it's local too.
You will appreciate some aspects of America when you get back (toilets come to mind), but you will never forget the time you spend there or the people who you meet. The place is 11 time zones across, look around and find somewhere you like by sight, then go for it! |

Why not? It is probably just as good as America in terms of education - perhaps better.
GEE HONESTLY - sounds just like America. |

Russia is moving toward it's history as part of the USSR. Power is controlled by Communists who have had roles within the KGB. Russia is becoming the greatest threat to American security by strongly allying themselves with Iran, North Korea and Venezuala. Stay away from Russia. |
