I don't fast and sometimes, when they hit that drum in front of my window, they make me go mad. People have alarm clocks now...plus I don't really think that the tradition is being performed anymore...every bayram we get so many different drummers who claim that it was "them" who woke us up (like I needed them to :P) and claim money. And honestly, what they do is just hit the drum, what tradition are we talking about? It was in the past.
Sorry guys, I'm extremely annoyed at them. |

Where i live just next to me there is a church. Every Sunday they ring the bells while i am sleeping. But i have never thought that it was disrespectful. |

whats the matter, English Cazanova??
Its Turkey and people there have their own customs! should they become more "americanized"in order for you to feel more confortable?
If you would come to Greece and told me something about our tradition and customs too, I would answer you the same way.
If you dont like Turkey, dont visit again |

No it is not "silly" . It is a tradition and if you can't live with a country's tradition, you can just leave the country. I don't think anyone forces you to stay.
Disrespectful is you not those drummers.
Edit: Earthling, tradition is something coming from past and living today. Those little things make the difference between cultures. |

They probably think you need more spiritual cleansing. After all Ramadan is also a time to reflect on past sins. Maybe they want to exorcise the Armenian malady that makes you act like a nasty evil troll. |

Well, it is to wake people up so they can eat for the fast of next day.I never fast, but I never get bothered, since it is a tradition, and culturally acceptable in Turkey. Just because I didn't fast did not mean others should not be woken up.
It is courtesy to tip the drummers. And they come door to door, to see who will tip them usually at the end of the Ramadan, during the last week. That is the only way they make their money. No one pays them to wake up and drum to wake others up walking miles and miles... It is hard job. Give them some credit.
I think you are having a cultural shock, since these traditions are obviously new to you... When we don't know something, and when we are new to something, we always get bothered. But empathy can help our fitting in skills, especially when living somewhere other than where we used to live.
For instance, I used to be very much bothered by fireworks set up by the neighbors in my neighborhood during 4th of July. I thought it was dangerous, too loud, and rude... But just because I don't like fireworks lit by people vs. professionals, does not mean others cannot enjoy it. Although it is illegal in some parts of the US, it is not everywhere. So, I have just accepted it as a traditional way of celebrating forth of July especially among younger generations. It does not bother me that much anymore, since I have come in terms with it :) I recommend the same for you, I mean having a more positive attitude. It helps with adjustment to a new setting. Good luck! |

Personally, I felt they were loud for that early in the morning, but I am not a morning person either. I didn't have any problem with them banging the drum when they came around in the evening.
I knew one whole street who didn't like the drummer and they paid him to NOT come down their street. I didn't find him that annoying that I would organize my neighbors against him :) Actually many of my neighbors were very strong in their Muslim faith and got up to fast and they appreciated him coming by.
When it came time to tip the drummer my neighbors were there to help me to know how much I should give. I appreciated the opportunity to tip him, I felt I was participating in the culture, and I respect the fact that that was his means of earning money. |

its a tradition I like it sometimes, but it should be continued, stopping drummers would be a disrespect to people who fast |
