OK, some of you will take my answer the wrong way, but please try to see ALL sides of this.

Most importantly, yes, it is a tragedy that Alexandros was killed, and the police who opened fire on him was very wrong and should never be allowed to work as a policeman again.

BUT, why did Alexandros and his friends throw a bottle at the police? What makes young people think this behavior is acceptable? I would never throw a bottle at anyone, let alone the police! Yes, we all know there are bad police everywhere, but there are also good police just trying to do their job, with a wife and children at home. How do those men deserve to be treated during their working day? Imagine your husband/father/brother being a policeman, how would you feel all day while they are at work? TERRIFIED is what I would feel! Terrified that some idiot thinks they can attack my loved one just because of the job they choose to do.

And, one last thing, many of the rioters in Athens dont even know the full story, they are just 14-25 year olds who are bored and want to make some trouble. (My friend told me her brother admitted he doesnt know why he is burning things, but found it fun and a laugh) Athens should be a city we are proud of, not something to be burned and damaged because we dont agree with something.

RIP Alexandros. This is dedicated to you http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ut9NaO-U6w8

That dreadful night cops were out to cover the hugest scandal of all times.

This scandal involved the Greek Church (the most corrupt organisation after Vatican, CIA, and the KGB), a Greek secretary who made billions in the span of a few years and lawyer of the convent and secret accounts in tax heaven Cyprus.

The monastery was bribing state officials and purchasing huge chunks of land at a price inferior to fair market value and selling them right away to greedy businessmen, still at a proce below the fair market value.

The monastery, the bribed officers and the businessmen were making billions overnight.

People were angry and down right pissed off.

SOMETHING HAD to happen, since people's anger was grinding the government's appeal to local slaves, sorry I mean citizens.

The radio call was recorded and played on air the day after the event. Clearly, the cops were given clear instruction to leave the area. The dirty cops drove their copcar to nearby place and returned on foot to mess with immature youths.

At some point they got in a fight with teenagers, pulled their guns out of their holsters and fired.

One round got young Alexandros on the chest.

In Greece, cops are supposed to fire a gun only when they are shoot at or in a clear and present danger.

Right away, the cops hired the most expensive lawyers in the country whose first statement was that "God wanted so to happen and it is OK" and that "Courts will decide if Alexander may deserved to die".
This lawyer poked in the past of the youth to falsely claim that he was a troubled youth (as if Greek cop's job is to shoot to death troubled youth). The youth was in no way in any trouble as said on national broadcast the director of his school.

The shooting infuriated the Greek youth. The statements of the canny lawyer added fuel to the flames.

Greek youths are in a 15 to 20% unemployment. When they have a job, they get a salary of 600 to 800 Euros, even when they hold college degrees and Master's degrees. This is the phenomenon of the "700 Euros Generation" also called GEN700. With this dismal buying power, they can not dream buying a car, let alone a 2-bedroom apartment. Even at the age of 30 (and sometimes later) they have to rely on their parents to live.

Greek youths (not exclusively in Greece, but throughout continental Europe) are in despair and angry.

In this context, the brutal assassination of Alexandros ignited a fire to a powder that was already there. For 27 days angry youths condemned to poverty took on the streets on a massive scale. Uncontrollable riots trashed Athens and sent a clear message that people will not accept impunity for Alexandros assassination.

Lazopoulos showed a clip where cops, disguised as angry youths holding crowbars, attacked stores with the real youths.

In a country where people eat out of garbage cans, the elder have no access to healthcare and young people have no access to jobs and decency, the riots were absolutely rightful.

The assassination of young Alexandros covered up the scandal.

Now, even those who were pissed off with the monastery scandal, forgot completely about it and the subject of discussion is now the sudden, dreadful and untimely death of young Alexandros, may G_d rest his soul.

My detractors are nationalists who claim that there is no civil unrest in Greece and that everything is Business as usual. It is not. Greece is unable to solve any social problem. Social issues keep piling up and the government just consumes the spectacle of people burning Athens. Out of fanaticism if not nationalism, some Greeks here on Yahoo choose to cover up the facts and when they can't, they slander, cuss and badmouth sincere posts like this one. Like if there is no Utube, Yahoo News, Reuters, BBC, CNN, Newspapers, radio and TV.
Even today, cops were beating the sh*t out of youths parading for education reform. Even Lawyers were arrested today to prevent them form releasing arrested youths. Welcome to Greece.

Like I told Captain Kirk. "He' s dead Jim --- pretty words of regret and violent petty protest aren't going to bring him back."

Right now, the body count is rising in Gaza, Palestine and humanitarian castophe that is Darfur, Sudan is still going on.

Why is it, the death of one is a tragedy full of out cries and protests of injustice, shop looting, tire burning and vandalism, while the deaths of hundreds and thousands are considered a sad statistic that goes on without scrutiny and not so much as a single shed of tear?

No one protested about the cop who's deathly injured right now from anarchists. He is not less human than Alexandros was. That's my view.

Eric
I apologize for my former answer. I am just an idiot full of crap who hates everything greek.

I should go easy on them I guess, after all I insult them and those greek idiots thumb me up.

But let me please make a correction. Those are not the most corrupted organizations on the world because when it comes to corruption and dirty money nobody can reach the jews.

its horrible, but then again 2 wrongs dont make a right and we should all feel the same for the cop,he dies in the end the same as alexis for no reason.

I am American but love Greece, and of course this is a big tragedy both events the teenager and the policeman, but I am a firm believer that the more you push against something the more attention it gets and it grows, violence generates more violence, this can be clearly seen in this case, Alex was killed people protested and then some more others get injured, I think we should be together but for good causes and use as less violence as possible. Greece is such a beautiful country and is a shame that now half of its center is destroyed. By the way I have not being able to keep track of what is going on there, are the riots over?, which are the latest updates about this?.

It is really unthinkable that such a thing happened!

As for the policeman who was injured, who was mentioned above, I must point out that of course we are sad about him - he is even from my grandmother's village, almost related to me - but there is a difference: those who shot him are not represented the state or armed by teh state or paid by the state. They are common criminals, and killing innocent people is what criminals do. But this MUST NOT be what cops do! It is pointless to protest against criminals, in that case we should protest every time the law is broken by someone, ie every day! But you protest when the state and its organs break the law instead of implementing it!

I had a Grigoropoulos for dinner once. Wait until I tell the other giants. These Peloponnesians are delish!
