It was by no doubt the earthquake in 1999. I've been to the area 4 days after the disaster to bring aid supplies. It is impossible to imagine the situation. Even in the worst nightmares a person can not imagine such a tragedy.

An old man was thanking the rescue workers with the greatest appreciation who found the dead body of his 3 or 4 year old grandson....

Unfortunately the worst of the worst is not yet to come. Another major earthquake is expected in Ä°stanbul area and with hundreds of thousands of poorly built apartment buildings, the estimated death toll is pronounced as millions.

I think it was the earthquake in 1999.It did not hurt me.It just woke me up.

If we put aside the natural disasters and wars,and i think we should,the worst disasters that ever happened to Turkey are the incompitent,stingy morons who ruled the country for the past 50 years.Which one of them would you like me to start counting.Starting from S.Demirel,i think the worst one was Tansu Ciller,she was a real disaster or catastrophe is a better word to explain her.

The earthquake of 1999. Thousands of people left without a home and property, apart from the ones lost in the ruins. I think that the fires of this summer are quite a desaster too, in relation with all the other fires which burnt (and still burn) Greece and the Balkans. The result will be a dramatic change of the climate in the territory.
(We get informed about the lack of water too, mainly at Konya. How will people cope there?).

Without a doubt the earthquake in 1999. I was on vacation there, in Adapazari, 2 weeks before it happened. Insallah, nothing like this or even close to this will ever happen anywhere.

i dont know about natural disaster but i know some political disaters. one of them Mr. bulent ecevit (very old guy) became PM in 1999 and things went down. GDP per capita was 3000 went down to $2000 ect

The worst natural disaster was the Kocaeli earthquake in August 1999. Official number of casualties was 30,000. Most of these people died not because the earthquake was strong, but because the buildings were weak. The tragedy lies in the fact that authorities knew it and did not do anything. One such building tycoon is now out of jail and freely walking around with all that blood in his hands.
The worst man-made disaster I think was pushing the Ottoman Empire into World War I and getting it destroyed; millions of people getting killed, and the country being occupied by the victors.
It took another war, the 'war of independence' under the great leadership of AtatÃ¼rk, to free Turkey and establish modern Republic of Turkey.
