definitely a passport
a visa if the country you are visiting requires it
You can probably find out about visa requirements by doing a search on line, and can definitely find out by contacting the State Department (and probably by checking the State Department's website).

Depends on what your citizenship is, where you're going, and for how long. If you are an American citizen and you want to go to a country in the Schengen Space (all of Western Europe except for Great Britain and Ireland), you can go for upto three months with just a passport (no visa needed), but if you want to stay longer, you need to have a tourist visa (which lasts 6 months). For Eastern European countries, I'm not sure when they are going to be integrated into the Schengen Space or what the situation is regarding border control, so the best thing to do would be to check the website of the country's consulate/embassy in your country of citizenship.

Most countries in Europe you will just need your passport, it may require a minimum amount of time left on it before it expires. France for example you need three months at least. Some countries do require a visa, try enquiring at a good travel agent/travel broker, may take some time for paperwork to come through so plan ahead
