PHUTZOID

What european countries should I avoid driving in?

I am planning to drive around europe next summer but have heard that the quality of the roads in some countries are not very good. I want to avoid dirt roads and pot holes or roads that might cause my vehicle to fall apart. I'd also like to avoid countries where there is heavy congestion or serious road safety issues. I am especially interested in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Slovenia and Greece. All comments appreciated.

"Makedonia ge Ellenike" I did know about your anti-Macedonian sentiment, but this time you went over the wall.

You have never been in Albania, Moldova or the Macedonia.
Unless you are a blind person in which case I will take my attack back.

Otherwise I am accusing you of premeditated lying, to stop the tourism to those countries - out of your personal grudge.

Some of the places in Albania and Moldova are so pristine and beautiful that if you do see them you will wish to die in them.

I do love the Greece scenery, but the Greek government would pay trillions of Euros to have some of those places in Albania and Moldova.(if they would have the money).
I don't believe there is a trillion Euro in the Greek treasury.

I can't speak for Macedonia - cause I have never been there.
Stop spitting fire on your Northern neighbours.

Avoid only Greece

bulgaria - make sure you have a kasko insurance, they are keen on steeling foreign registered cars over there.
albania serbia and macedonia, maybe not the same roads as in germany, but, you might find it a refreshing experience. i recommend them.
greece - they'll vandalise your car, especially if it is nicer than what their standards are.

If you like to get some war experience, to smell the smoke of riots and gun-powder, don't avoid Greece. Go there and enjoy in real paintball, with real bullets!

If you want to use the better highways in most of the countries you listed, you have to buy highway passes in order to drive on them. You'll have to buy them at the border, usually in a petrol station. The costs vary from country to country, and they are valid only for the country you purchased them in.

I think, too, that the poorer the country the worse the roads are going to be.

Romania definitely has some serious issues with its roads (congested, potholes, roadworks etc). They are working on this, but earlier this year it was still terrible.

Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia are all OK.

Serbia has toll roads that charge you significantly more if your car doesn't have Serbian plates.

The further south you go, the worse the driving becomes.

MAKEDONIA is a state in Greece. So, will you visit Greece twice?

Try to avoid Serbia, Romania, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania and Poland. Or if you do, don't leave your car too far from you.

I think Julie gave you the best advice. We drove through Germany and most of Poland without any problem. Of course rural areas would have some rough roads, but certainly not to the point of doing damage to your vehicle. I don't know about the other countries, but would assume they are similar.

Sounds like you're planning a very nice trip. Enjoy!

julie
I've only been to some of those countries, but I think you would be ok if you stayed on the main roads, usually they are pretty good. The smaller ones, on the other hand, can be a lot worse. Sorry about the lack of information, but I hope it can be some help...

Do not go to Moldova, F.Y.R.O.M (the name is not Macedonia) and Albania. Those countries are the poorest of Europe, and trust me there's nothing interesting at them.
All of the other countries especially Poland, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece are amazing for a trip.

@Igor stop judging th "Μακεδονία γη Ελληνική" ,especially when there are answers from users like Laoplanos ,Jimmy, etc who say worst about Greece.
Or their comments are not in order to defame Greece, and the "Μακεδονία γη Ελληνική"'s are?????

ps:Since you havent seen the whole Greek scenery, dont be sure that Moldova's places or Albania's are far better.
I wont disagree that they have nice places ,but ....pay trillions?
cmon....
