What european country would you recommend for a 20 something single woman who wants to travel alone?

Explain your advice, why do you recommend this country? Language is not a problem since most people in europe understand and speak english.

It really depends what your interests are, if you want to see ancient history and architecture then go to Italy or Greece. Get a Lonely Planet Guide book for that country and stay in mid-range budget places, you will meet many foreign traveling people with similar interests, exchange information and nobody wil bother you since they all have their agendas. These are also the people to team up with for more destinations and to mine their experiences for future trips of your own.

To travel GB or Southern Ireland can be very lonely for a young 20 yr old unless somebody is accompanying you and you can rent a car driving around.. . .that is what I did with a friend, we found that the locals were more receptive to us and we were invited into homes, parties and gatherings.
Whatever you decide on, my advice is to get a LONELY PLANET guidebook for that region. . .I have a shelve full of the whole world.

Any European capital can be a very nice experience...

While having a Lonely Planet is a good start, remember that using it will only bring you to places that the writers of that book have been to. If you stay in a country for more than a few days, then try going about towns and cities without it. Travelling is about discovery and to discover places that others already found is self-defeating. Americans, it seems, tend to want things all neat and tidy when they travel and so miss so much. Having said all that, go anywhere you'd like in Europe as each country is unique and anyone that you choose will impact your life. Enjoy!

I would say that Greece having one of the lowest criminality rates in Europe must be a good choice for a single woman.
You will also have many choices.Wild night life , quite sunny beaches , great food , nice people and even if you want to get hooked with a guy, as a woman alone in summer holidays you will find many available ones ! ;)

Ancient greece
Greece is the best country by far.
1) No criminality
2) Very friendly people

I think you would enjoy all of Europe. There is no country that is especially dangerous for women, just avoid specific areas at night, and that also apply wherever you are. Southern European men can be more verbal, but taht may be an annoyance rahter than a safety issue.
The Scandinavian countrys are very gender equal, and there will be very little hassle there.
But as I said earlier, keep your head screwed on properly, stay out of troubled areas like train stations, parks etc, and you will have fun all over Europe.

any country in skandinavia. safe enough and beautiful

I would say Spain or Italy just because they're beautiful countries where's so much to see and the weather is usually good. As a woman alone, of course, you will be more approached by men. But you just have to find a way to cope with it, they won't bite ;)
Language can be a problem though. I've traveled in Spain and especially in the south they're not too many people who speak English. In Italy it's even worse. Bring a travel dictionary with you and you'll be just fine.

Even though you say the language isn't a problem, I'd still recommend the British Isles. They're very beautiful and I would have loved to travel more there (I was in a group, though).

If you're going to be alone, it'd be best if you spoke the language. Some people in other countries would prefer that you spoke the language and it's always best to travel in groups! So, I'd really recommend staying in a place where you know the language

Ireland and the U.K are more tourist friendly areas, unlike anywhere near the mediterranean, where you will be followed by gawking locals

knockbegsucks
While i'm too lazy to write a full explanation. Go to:

Germany - for the people
France - for the food
Italy - for the Ice cream
Russia - for the Drink
Ireland - for the nights out
Spain - for the weather
