What interesting things can I do in Amsterdam?

My boyfreind and I are going in Feb. We dont want to spend the whole weekend in coffeeshops, so what do you receommend? We are fairly open minded and looking for alternative and conventional things to do.

Well you could spend some of the weekend in the coffee shops...I have seen the most amazing ones there!
Go on one of the paddle boats and take a spin on the river (we got lost and had to abandon our boat!!)
Go to the Ice Bar, the Weed Museum, Van Gogh, Heineken Brewery...don't worry. there is plenty to do...many tourists offices there...you will have a blast (visit the Amsterdam Dungeon too...that is great!)
The smoking ban in coming into effect June so I would suggest you make a run for those coffee shops while you still can! Oh, and if you want to try mushrooms...make sure you are in the safety of your hotel room with your boyfriend!

Get on a Circle 20 tram.
It cost £3 about 5 years ago and you can get on or off it and then see some sights and get on the next one with the same ticket all day.
Dam Square.
Anne Franks house.
The diamond factory.
All worth a visit and the trams stops at all of them and you can get a leaflet telling you were else it stops from the driver.

Take the river sightseeing cruise and visit Rembrandt's home or Anne Frank's hiding place. All very worthwhile.

You must walk through the Red light district at night, but not too late (make sure you walk through the most happening part). You should also rent a bike at least one day to travel around the city like half of the people do. You can also take day trips to surrounding areas like Zaanse-Schaans that has windmills and cheese, Edam that makes lots of cheese, and other places that focus on tulips. The Anne-Frank house is a good site and has a very good Dutch pancake shop just down the street called the Pancake Bakery...make sure to try it! (for lunch or dinner, not breakfast) The Rembrandt and Rijksmuseum are nice art museums and Leidseplein has a lot of restaurants and clubs. You can also take a boat tour on the canals throughout the city. Enjoy! The sex museum on Damrak is very interesting too, just watch out for the beastiality portion as it's pretty gross.

P.S. If you have more time, Bruges, Belgium is a very worthwhile stop and has the best chocolate you'll ever taste and lots of good restaurants that serve mussels. If you are a beer drinker, their beer is supposed to be amazing too.

You could visit the red light district or the sex museum alternatively you could visit the Anne Frank Museum, maybe go for a cruise on the river. Hire some bikes and do as the Dutch do ride around the City. I lived in Holland for 4 years and loved it, you will find so much to do and maybe relax occasionally in the coffee shops.

josephrob2003
you must go on the canal tours, get one where you are served wine, goats cheese and nuts, very relaxing, and use the trams to get about, you see far more as they are high up off the ground

Get stoned and sleep with a hooker - actually im only joking about sleeping with the hooker, but definately go thru the red light district, it is such an eye opener!!

I would love to go to the museum there and see the Van Gogh paintings in it.

Go to the red light district. Something that you will never see again.

All kinds of people out there.

When we went there we liked going round Anne Frank's place but we also took the coach to other towns. Madurodam was a miniature village we found interesting and there are also seaside villages and the town of Delft where they make china worth visiting. That's because we also wanted to see more of the country, not just the capital city.

Have you never heard of GUIDE BOOKS? I suggest you BUY one.... at the very least, check with tourist information when you get there and they will give you FREE information... but it won't be as good as the books you can BUY.
