What is European about Turkey?

Istanbul and Thrace aside, Turkey is not located in Europe. Culturally the Turks have nothing in common with us, so what makes them think they are Europeans?

What makes you think, that we think we are Europeans? Hmm perhaps your infected racist brain which continuously tells you that you're perfect and everyone else wants to be like you so as to cover up the hole in your soul created by your possible inferiority complex?

I'm born in İstanbul, raised in İstanbul (On the *European* side) and I am NOT a European.

Happy?

If being European means being Christians, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means being biased against others, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means starting two world wars, causing millions of people to die, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means exploiting underdeveloped countries and getting rich through it, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means confining your mind within some geographical borders, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means belittling others, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means exploiting other nationalities as cheap labor, and then telling them "get out", no Turkey is not European.
If being European means having so much 'democracy and freedom of expression' that you can ridicule other religions, no Turkey is not European.
If being European means seeing yourself as the best, no Turkey is not European. In fact Turks believe they are better than most Europeans. At least they still share their bread with hungry strangers.

denyocan
how did you get the impression that Turks think themselves to be europeans? Sorry we`re not nazis, and we`re not governed by a bloody nazi called ratzinger, That said we are not europeans.

They're a secular country, they've been involved in European affairs for most of the 20th and 21st century, they are part of European Military and Technological organizations such as NATO, the Council of Europe, and, the OECD and they adhere to the Economic principles of free-market capitalism. They are some of the most prime examples of a democratic country operating in a religion most people see as incompatible with a democracy

Turkey is partly in Europe.
it is Eurasian.
you cannot say that it is not located in Europe.
i think thats one of Turkeys many very good points.
it makes it culturally different, the way there are asian influences and also european it makes it a brilliant country.
i would rather it not join the EU aswell. it would change Turkey for the worse i think.

wowww.. so this is the new ID you acquired ???

someone very notorious here acquired another new(?) ID just today (16 Jan 2008) in order to as a provocative and seemingly insolent question..

and we're supposed to take it seriously?
.. as if this malicious person (whom we all know very well) candidly wants to get an answer?

Pls dude get a life... or at least be more creative when you expose your foolishly prejudiced & racist ideas.

Note to Yahoo Staff: This racist person is harrassing the participants here. You'd better delete this hateful statement which is "posed" like a question.

I think you flatter yourself when you say they think they are Europeans. First and foremost, Turks think they are Turks. The rest is geography, not culture.

If Turks are not Europeans, nor are they Asians or Arabs and certainly not Africans, Americans or Antarcticans, then it must prove the point that Turkey is a continent in and of itself, and Eurasia is a myth, as it is only a peninsula from Turkey.

By the way, anarlm is right!
Also, bixlives70 is right!
and he didn't even mention the inter-religious conflicts in Northern Ireland or the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans as clear signs that Europeans are not a single people to themselves. :)

Good Evening

You say: "Culturally the Turks have nothing in common with us..."

Who is us?

Compare the following European ethnicities, characters and nations with each other:

- Sicilans
- Bavarians
- Macedonian Greeks
- Danish Protestants
- French Socialists
- Spanish members of Opus Dei
- Scottish people
- Londoners
- Corsicans
- Fashionistas from Milan
- Hungarian Roma
- Bulgarian farmers
- Roman Popists

Do you really think that these people have a lot in common?

I hear you saying "They are all Christians!" However, I don't see a religious common sense between a fundamentalist protestant from Denmark , a Catholic from Poland and an Orthodox Greek. Besides that, there are a lot of atheists in Europe. Are those people bad Europeans or no Europeans at all? Well, I don't think so.

Turkey is a melting pot of both Asian and European cultures. So they have that much in common with the other Europeans like the other ones in the above mentioned examples.
