New year is the beginning or the new year. 2008!!

The New Year is an event that happens when a culture celebrates the end of one year and the beginning of the next year. Cultures that measure yearly calendars all have New Year celebrations.

Some additional info for u...
The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and started the year on 1 March, which is still reflected in the names of some months which derive from Latin: September (seventh), October (eighth), November (ninth), December (tenth). Around 713 BC the months of January and February were added to the year, traditionally by the second king, Numa Pompilius, along with the leap month Intercalaris

well , since you asked this in the netherlands section,

new year = nieuw jaar

and we dutch celebrate it with lots of fireworks going off at midnight, some champagne and lots of oliebollen and appelflappen

happy new year

Oriental Sous-chef
You got that right dutchcutie68: lots of fireworks, champagne and other fluids, sounds of policecars and perhaps the occasion fire engine. But for the most part we do enjoy ourselves.
Gelukkig Nieuwjaar.

Interesting question, not so easy as one would think. In the western world the year changes on 31st of December at 12.00 o´clock at night. Soon we will have the year 2008 ( A.D., anno Domini = in the year of our Lord; after the birth of Jesus Christ.)

To read the history of ancient Rome can help a lot, if you want to know more about " A year and New Year".

The Muslim world as well as the Chinese do not celebrate New Year on 31st of Dec. (I´m sure there are others too.) They celebrate later next year and of course have their own reasons to celebrate their New Year, their new year will not be 2008.

Happy Holidays to you from Finland!
