What is a cheap place to stay in european countries for long periods of time? Other than youth hostels.?

Are there like small houses or cottages you rent for a month or so? I don't have to stay right in a big city.. i don't mind staying out in the country a little ways. I'm thinking in France or Italy, or maybe Ireland.

don't sleep in public places - you could easily get mugged or worse (many city parks are pick up joints for cottaging at night now). Bed & Breakfast places are usually cheaper than hotels and any tourist centre in the cities can guide you to some, plus word of mouth in Ireland for sure or websites - like forums for interests you have or newspapers from those regions etc. B&B's i nthe country for sure are much cheaper. The only thing I can say about France is anywhere near Paris is ssooo expensive. Campsites are really cheap and Italy has nice weather late into summer if you want to hire a caravan (trailer?) or use of tent etc. Cottages and villas are sometimes worth it for long term but if you aren't driving it could be a nightmare to get supplies in depending on where you go so ask your taxi to bring you to a supermarket on your way there before you arrive. Ireland is currently raiing (surprise) but will be nice again in late August / Sept. Have a nice time :)

you should try to find a family to stay with. i'm sure if you search around the net, you'll find a site that will point you towards families that rent out rooms.

You may either use bed and breakfast accomodation

http://www.bedandbreakfasts.net/europe.asp

or search for a holiday residence and do self-catering
