Your country reminds me sometimes of a strange and attractive mix of Spain, Russia and Turkey...
That is to say a kind of melting-pot of Latin (Latino) ,Slavic and Middle-Eastern cultures. |

Turkey dear,
Aside the religious difference, I was amazed to see how similar we are from clothing to food, from gestures to neighborhood life, from social aspects to the apartment buildings structure while I was in Athens. We even use the same idioms exactly word by word.
You should pay a visit to Turkey and see for yourself :) |

Nice Question!
Your question is of double morale. The Greek (Hellenic) Nation has no "brotherhood" but it exists all over the world. The expression Greece is an "un-adelphic" country is correct. There is only Cyprus who claims to be Hellenic. We know very well what that means.
I am citizen of Greece but I will never be Greek. Greeks live in southern Italy. My origin is from the non forgotten fatherland PONTOS meaning that I belong to the Hellenic folk groups.
What non Greeks cannot understand is that what they name Greece and Greeks is much more. As for example around the Black Sea, in all countries there are one million and more people who ARE proud of being Greeks (Hellenes) in origin and they are registered having Greek nationality sharing the citizenship of the country where they live. Those people have never been in Greece and are not registered as Greeks in Greek archives, but Greeks they are. An other thing many people do not understand is the difference between the interior and exterior Greeks (native Greeks and Greeks of the Diaspora). There are more than 20 million people claiming to be Greeks and more than 80 million people having Greek blood in their veins. Of course those people bear the citizenship of other countries. More than two million people in Turkey are direct Greeks fearing to say so because of the intern political chaotic status. I am in contact with many of them, even relatives of mine, who live in Turkey. How can they say they are Greeks when events that afford our religion are celebration events in Turkey.
Yesterday the Supreme Temple of My God, Hagia Sophia, was turned to a whorehouse. The local authorities organized an exhibition of "master arts" and modeling in The Church of Wisdom of our Christian God.
I said double morale question. Everything you see around you is based on Hellenic Heritage and Culture. The Western World adopted all ancient Greek spirit, knowledge and wisdom to develop the world as we know it today. In this direction all countries sharing western culture are similar in way of living, thinking and creating.
Last period is the worse all periods related to Hellenic Heritage because one of the trends of living is the so called American Way which is to eliminate all tradition, culture and manners and habits to evaluate a New Age based on a Global leadership and one religion.
There is much to tell here.
I respect your hospitality and Philoxenia and I stop here.
Greetings from Kilkis,
Central Macedonia, Greece

Every country has something special, I don't think there is any country similar to Greece, well except for Cyprus. If you want similar weather, beaches etc., you can go to Italy or Spain, but I don't think anything else will be like Greece. If you want similar religion, you can go to Serbia, Bulgaria, Russia etc., but Slavic countries are not really similar to Greece. Now, all Balkan countries have some things in common, but you have to face it, those things came from Turkey. That is the place that kinda "bonds us together". There are a lot of Turkish influences that happened during the Ottoman Empire, and that is the common thing in all Balkan countries, including Greece. |

I think Greece is totally unique, but it actually had many cultural exchanges and many genetic mixings with several civilizations of the Mediterranean, Slavic countries and even Africa and Asia ( Alexander the Great who conquered lands in Egypt and India).
So I don't see what is disturbing you in having some cultural similarities with the Turkish Nation.
There obviously had been an interaction between Greeks and Turks, after 400 years of cohabitation. ( And between Turks and Armenians, and between Turks and Arabs, and between Arabs and Greeks, etc, etc...).
Turks learned of lot of things from you, and you too learned a lot from them as well. That was a reciproc process.
Aside religion and language, there are obvious links between our both countries.
And there is no need to get upset, sad, glad, proud, shameful or whatever : That's just a fact, that's all.
And the same goes for the Turkish-Iranian relation, the Turkish-Arab relation, the Jewish-Arab relation, the Russian-Greek relation, the Albanian-Turkish relation, and so on...
Greece is similar to Turkey, on many aspects, between other countries as well.
And Greece is not the only country which has similarities with Turkey : Bosnia,Albania, Arab countries have too, but in other different aspects.
What my friends above tried to make you understand is just that the connection between Greece and Turkey is very particular...At least as much as the Turkey-Armenia connection, even though many people won't agree with me ( especially Armenians, I guess..) |

Greece is really unique, there is no other place in the world having this huge diversity of landscape with the islands, mountains, people, traditions, local cuisine etc.
In all fairness however, southern Italy & western Turkey have many things in common & the people share too many traditions, attitudes etc. But in order to be more accurate, I m talking about vacation, living there permanently is an other issue. |

Well, I'm not sure if your idea of "similar" is the same with mine, but of all the countries I've visited, the one that reminded me most of Greece is Southern Italy. Calabria and Sicily especially.
(I don't believe in the saying the poster above me mentioned though).
ADDED: And Corsica, to some extent.
ADDED: And Albania, to some extent.
ADDED: I can't really speak about Turkey because, as I've never been there, I can't form an opinion of my own. But I'm pretty sure that we have similar aspects, given the length of time that Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire... |

I guess, if you're looking for something as close to Greece as possible, you have to stay in the Balkans, but choose orthodox countries. I think the best choice would probably be Bulgaria: They are orthodox like Greeks, geographically very close to Greece, warm weather, nice beaches, they share similar Balkan culture, they are now also in the EU etc. But still, you won't find Greece there, as many people here said it is unique. Why do you want to move out anyway? What's wrong with living in Greece?
P.S. No, I don't think Serbia would be a good choice. Except for the religion, there are not many other similarities. Serbia has no sea, the weather is much colder, you won't find that Mediterranean element, and it's still a pretty poor country. |
